  3. Summary • The Narrator is a writer named Nick Carraway, who has moved from the Midwest to New York in 1922. • He becomes entangled in the affairs of others due to his non-judgmental character. They confide in him.

  4. Summary • He moves into the small guest house next to Jay Gatsby, a mysterious billionaire who gives extravagant parties every weekend, but isn’t really seen attending. Where is the money coming from? Why the elaborate parties? • He visits his cousin, Daisy, and her husband. The next day her husband takes him for a day on the town. With his girlfriend. • In the end, after everything has been done, Nick admits there is a limit to his tolerance and forgiveness. Some people do not deserve it.

  5. Theme: Hope • Carraway, the main character, chooses to hope that people are good, and have honorable intentions. He reserves judgment and holds out for the best. • Gatsby hopes beyond time and reason to be with the woman he loves. • Even after the situation has turned bleak and hopeless, Gatsby chooses to hope. He believes.
