SHELTER The Timucua lived in round houses made of wood, clay with thatched roofs . The houses were built next to each other so they could build a wall around the town for protection .The chief house stood in the center of the town.
Location • Most early native Americans who lived in Northeast Florida were called • theTimucua. Thesepeople lived in a tropical area of Florida that • Now includes Jacksonville and St. Augustine.
Culture • Men cleared the land • Women planted corn ,squash ,bean’s • Corn was the most important crop • The Timucua loved to run races and play games like shooting with bows and arrows • The men wore a loin cloth like a bikini bathing suitwomen also wore a kind of loin cloth made out of leather.
Food • The Timucuas hunted deer, bear, raccoons, opossum ,squirrel, and rabbits • The Timucuas had sea food like fish, shark, oyster, crab, shrimp, clam, and welks • The other food they ate was snake, tortoise, alligator, turtle, terrapin, mink, boar, dolphin, fox, seal , duck , mussel, turkey, and frog.
History • Historians think that there first meeting between the Timucua and European explores was in 1513,when Ponce de Leon first landed in Florida. At that time there were around 14,000 Timucua . Most were killed by diseases , such as smallpox ,in the battle against them. Historians think that the last of the Timucua left with the Spanish for Cuba in 1763.
