This solicitation addresses that challenge by creating a set of exemplar national and global data research infrastructure organizations (dubbed DataNet Partners) that provide unique opportunities to communities of researchers to advance science and/or engineering research and learning."
Internationaldevelopments U.K. JISC funding envelope introduced in 2011: Managing Research Data Programme "JISC considers it a priority to promote and support good research data management and sharing for the benefit of UK Higher Education and Research. The Managing Research Data Programme builds on earlier work which developed a number of important tools, technologies and services, and improved the support available for the sector to develop the necessary skills and expertise in this area."

Internationaldevelopments Riding the Wave created a framework for collaborative data infrastructure that has become EUDAT.
Internationaldevelopments EUDAT is a consortium currently consisting of 25 European partners, including data centers and technology providers, along with research communities and funding agencies from European 13 countries. • Federating access to multiple existing archives from many disciplines • Managing increasingly complex data policies • Optimising remote data access to minimise data transfer • Optimising workflow technologies to make remote data analysis possible
Internationaldevelopments Australian National Data Services (ANDS): formed to support “Platforms for Collaboration” within the Australian National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy initiative.
CARL-CFI proposal Beginning in May 2010, CARL embarked on an 18-month process to submit an application to the CFI for a national collaborative research data management infrastructure. A decision at the October 2011 meeting of the U15 Vice Presidents of Research resulted in CARL withdrawing it application. The only CFI funding envelope available was their Leading Edge and New Initiatives Fund, while the CARL project was better suited for a national platform program.
National Data Summit Mapping the Data Landscape: Report of the 2011 Canadian Research Data Summit Research Data Strategy Working Group (RDSWG) Action plan: • Broaden the stakeholder group in the RDSWG to reflect the diversity of research data interests • Establish a national advisory council of senior representatives • Undertake a national online consultation on the results of the Data Summit • Pursue resource development to form a secretariat for the RDSWG • Launch Research Data Canada as a multi-stakeholder, volunteer-driven replacement to the RDSWG

Gaffield’sposition paper At CASRAI's reconnection 2012conference, Chad Gaffield introduced a position paper entitled, "Towards a Robust and Sustainable Ecosystem for Enhanced Digital Scholarship" that describes digital scholarship as the future of higher education. He claims that research data also now encompasslearning data as well as innovation data. Data will drive digital scholarship. "In the distributed, open, empowered world of Digital Scholarship, coordination rather than control is key especially as networks replace vertically-integrated hierarchies."
Gaffield’sposition paper He concluded his discussion with three agenda items for Federal Research Granting Agencies: • Informed by precedents elsewhere and developed in consultation, publish guidelines for effective Data Management Plans, and make compulsory their inclusion with grant applications and final reports. • Informed by precedents elsewhere and developed in consultation, formally describe contributions to Digital Scholarship that will be included in the evaluation process (creation and deposit of data in trusted repository, etc.).
Gaffield’sposition paper • Keep current with how other like-minded countries are dealing with Digital Scholarship with a view toward learning from their strategies and experience (including nature and extent of investments), and in order to benchmark progress and to monitor how Canada is doing relative to others.

Where’s Canada? A gap analysis on research data infrastructure was conducted by the Research Data Strategy Working Group in 2008 and updated in 2011. Kathleen will review the findings from this analysis.
