Knowledge Management is a wide concept involving the processes of identifying and collecting relevant information and knowledge currently available, its classification and storage, timely dissemination and updating. The United Nations FoundationKnowledge Management in the United Nations System
Getting the right information to the right people at the right time.
Clearly it doesn’t work with football, but Why won’t it work with Knowledge Management?
You are building a community of knowledge, not an ERP system
Most knowledge management systems typically only capture a percentage of an organization’s intellectual capital • Social networking and collaboration methodologies can be leveraged to capture the large portions of knowledge, data, and new ideas that escape traditional KM systems • In addition, social media can be used to foster creativity and encourage innovation to improve the quality of new intellectual capital
People and Process first, then Technology … How does considering them enhance our overall solution?
Technology is just the tip of the iceberg – the part that everyone pays attention to It’s everything underneath that we so often forget about
If it’s not all about technology then how exactly does technology fit into all of this?
The tools facilitate the knowledge • Integrate with existing policies, processes and partnerships • Build Best Practices • Publish Project Evaluations • Evaluate Lessons Learned • Search Knowledgebase • Identify and Connect with Experts
Can’t we simply install the most advanced knowledge management platform with all of the latest features then give away iPads to entice people to use it?
You can’t build a community via memos, directives and gimmick giveaways Communications / Policy Advocacy Create Marketing Campaign Develop Key Messages Community Management Identify Stakeholders Engage with Stakeholders Solicit and Incorporate Feedback Knowledge Management Identify / Empower Champions Measure Success Seed Content Incentivize User Behavior Welcome New Users Establish Community Guidelines
Changing our ways • Change management strategy is vital to learn to work together “differently” • Viral content plays a part and needs an organized push • Plan for education – the tools are easy, but the concepts are new to many • Define internal social strategies • Demonstrate value fast • Involve core support allies: RFPs, CFPs, partners, UNICEF, etc.
Adoption 101 • How will this help me do my job better? • Identify goals early and help build tactical strategies • Manage the community visibility, openly • Tap into existing communities • Create examples and show them how it’s done
Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS) • Make it fast • Make it reliable • Make it accessible • Involve the community • Identify features based on the needs of users
