  1. Whitewater High School Emergency/Crisis Plan Information

  2. Emergency Crisis PlanFaculty and Staff • Review the Emergency Crisis Plan individually (note all areas that apply). • Load RSVP to your computer desktop. Download from Staff Page on WHS web-site (http://whswildcats.org/) and send it to your desktop. • If you are do not understand your responsibilities ask questions before the first week of school.

Emergency Crisis PlanFaculty and Staff • Always wear your school photo ID badge • In the event of an emergency, you can access the ECP (Emergency/Crisis Plan) handbook on Blackboard via an electronic device. • Account for your students and stay with them unless you are released by another staff member.

  4. Emergency Crisis PlanFaculty and Staff • Do your best to stay calm and be prepared to respond. • Stay alert and be aware of what is taking place around you.

  5. Activation of Building Crisis Plan • Always report anything that looks or sounds suspicious to administration or the SRO. • Always take drills seriously and convey the importance of the drills to the students.

  10. MODERATE THREAT CODE YELLOW Threat is EXTERIOR to the school. Example: Armed suspect fleeing police or criminal activity in area of school • Lock all exterior doors. Lock and monitor all access doors. • Monitor movement of students between classes • Students and staff return to and remain in building. • Classroom doors lock and movement is limited. • Block visibility into classrooms. • Continue teaching as normal within classroom. • Dismissal and departure of field trips should be delayed

  11. CODE ORANGE Threat is INTERIOR to the school. Example: Angry parent or student that is verbally upset and agitated but not a physical threat • Close and lock all exterior doors and classroom doors. • Cover classroom door windows. • Use RSVP for accountability of students and teachers. • Staff and students MAY NOT leave classroom. • Continue teaching as normal within classroom. • Do not contact office unless you have pertinent information or an emergency. • All school visitors must return to school office. MODERATE THREAT

HIGH THREAT LEVEL CODE RED RUN HIDE FIGHT RUN: If safe to do so, evacuate the students in an orderly manner to a predesignated assembly point away from the school building. • When leaving the building, make sure students know where to go, have the students raise their open hands above their heads and leave in a single file. This will demonstrate that you are not a threat. Use a window or other non-traditional exits, if necessary. • Take the Classroom GO Kit • Account for your students. • Communicate with the school your situation and wait for further instructions. Keep the students calm, protected and accounted for until help arrives. • Be prepared to be transported to a reunification site.

HIGH THREAT LEVEL CODE RED RUN HIDE FIGHT HIDE: If the threat is nearby or you do not have information on which to base a run decision, do the following: • Close and lock classroom doors immediately. Cover the classroom door window. Barricade the door with furniture, door stops, etc. • Use RSVP to report class status • Move students to a safe corner of the room and turn off lights • Remain silent • Instruct students to silence their cell phones • Prepare students in the event you must counter the intruder (s).

HIGH THREAT LEVEL CODE RED RUN HIDE FIGHT FIGHT: As a last resort, if the classroom door is breached by an intruder, react immediately to take counter measures. • Counter measures may include making noise, having students throw textbooks, water bottles, or anything to distract. • Adults may swarm the intruder and attempt to disarm or restrain • Move students to a safe corner of the room and turn off lights • If a weapon is dislodged, DO NOT pick it up. Cover it with a trash can.

  15. HIGH THREAT LEVEL CODE BLUE • INDICATES BOMB THREAT • BUILDING EVACUATION AT LEAST 1000 FEET FROM THE BUILDING GO TO (SARA HARP MINTER ELEMENTARY) • BE AWARE OF SURROUNDINGS AND LOOK FOR UNUSUAL DEVICES • LISTEN FOR SUSPICIOUS NOISES

School Safety Zone • “ School Safety Zone”- “School Safety Zone” means in, on, or within 1,000 feet of any school (used for bombs) • Emergency management personnel and local law enforcement agencies will immediately notify the school if some type of emergency/crisis situation arises within the “school safety zone”.

Severe Weather • A WATCH or WARNING to teachers and staff will be issued using the school intercom and two-way radios. • When tornado WARNING is issued, students should proceed to designated location against the wall and assume a kneeling position, head down, hands covering head. • Students in unsafe locations at time of the warning will go to a pre-designated location when directed by the teacher. • Students should not be permitted to leave the school for field trips or other events during a watch or a warning. If students are on a field trip at the time severe weather occurs, bus drivers will be alerted to get students back on bus and return to school, if appropriate. • Teachers are to close classroom windows and doors upon leaving with students. • Teachers should keep their class rosters with them during the drill and kneel behind their classes to be sure that the students are following the drill procedure. Teachers should verify student classroom count. • Students in mobile classrooms will be moved to safe areas when directed by the principal or his/her designee. • Keep windows closed.

Severe Weather (continued) • Tornado Watch = conditions are present for a tornado. • No one is to be outside • Classes in mobile rooms are to move inside to your assigned classrooms. • If you are in the auditorium, the cafeteria, or you do not have a classroom available move to the cross halls or your classroom. Refer to the map for your location. • Tornado Warning = Tornado has been sighted in the area. • The signal for a tornado drill or warning is a siren or a sequence of short bells. A P.A. announcement of the warning will be made. You must take cover on our verbal warning. • ** All classes will stay in their respective classroom during this drill or warning. Students are to sit against interior walls on the floor, knees pulled into chest, head down and head covered by their arms. They are not to remain at their desk. Close the class door and stay away from doors and windows. • Trailer classes will move inside to the cross hallways • Physical Education classes should move to the lower locker rooms. • Art move to the interior corner of the room. • Auto Tech close garage doors as soon as a Tornado Watch is issued. • Avoid all windows, glass doors, or areas underneath skylights. Students should assume protective kneeling positions against interior walls in their classroom. • Guidance and Front Office move into your offices against an interior wall. • At the conclusion of a drill, an “All-Clear” announcement will be made followed by three short rings of the bell. • Cafeteria Staff move to the storage room. • Confirm that you have all your students by checking your class roster. • Three short bells will sound for the all clear. I will follow the bells with a verbal all clear.

Fire • Report fire to office and pull the alarm. • Close all windows and doors to confine fire. • Keep fire lanes open outside of the schools. • Evacuate occupants of building to assigned places at least 500 feet from building. • Move to sheltered evacuation point at Sara Harp Minter in the case of inclement weather • Administer first aid, if necessary • Follow the directions of the responding Fire Officials.

Proactive Measures (Locations) • Location of AED (Automated External Defibrillator) Outside the Clinic in the Commons Area Inside each concession stand on both sides of the stadium • Alarm pad in the main entrance by the front office – Department Chairs have codes to share with you. If you forget your code come see me. • Code Red Alarm Activation is located in the Administration Conference Room and Front Office Secretary Desk.
