Coverage Area Results Note: Table assumes that either ERGM or BTEM completes development and is deployed for use with 5”/62 Mk 45 Mod 4; and that AGS range reaches threshold
Firing Rates and Cycle Times • AGS fires 10 rounds/minute, sustained; almost equal to the rate of fire for a six gun battery of howitzers, each firing 2 rounds/minute • 5”/62 Mk 45 Mod 4 has a sustained rate of fire ~16 rounds per minute • Cross section comparison*: • 127 mm (5”) round: 19.6 in2 • 155 mm (6.1”) round: 29.2 in2 • AGS has ~48% larger cross section • 16 hours to reload the magazines of a BURKE Class (DDG-51) destroyer during UNREP (http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNUS_5-62_mk45.htm) *Note: ratio of cylinder cross section is a crude proxy for warhead weight
Volume Fires: Net Explosive Weight • Define one unit of fire = 5” round • For the 5”/62 Mk 45 Mod 4 • NEWMk45 rate = 16 rounds/minute * 1 UOF/round • 16 UOF/minute • For the AGS • NEWAGS rate = 10 rounds/minute * 1.48 UOF/round • 14.8 UOF/minute • Ratio of NEW delivery rates (AGS: 5”/62): • 14.8:16 = 0.925 • AGS throws a larger round, but at a slower rate • What effect does this have on its advantage in coverage area, due to greater range?
Coverage Area –v- NEW rate Despite the slower rate of fire, the weight and range advantages of the AGS dominate the Mk 45 Mod 4
