Life Education Trust • Quick Facts: • Our Vision: To enhance the quality of children’s lives • Our Purpose: To educate and empower children to make healthy decisions so they can live life to the fullest • How do we do that? To reach children we have mobile learning centres that visit schools and children participate in lessons. We provide schools with follow up resources as part the school’s teaching plan • Why mobile learning centres? Children attend 1,000 hours in their own classroom each year and we use our unique environment to create a unique, stimulating learning environment to capture children’s imagination. • By the numbers, nationwide: • 25 years in New Zealand • 252,086 children from 1,462 schools in 2013 • 45 mobile learning centres operated by 35 regional Trusts, employing 48 specialist educators • 28,000 volunteer hours every year from 330 volunteer Trustees • Our request for support is to upgrade our mobile learning centre’s operating system. We need to replace the aging componentry including the existing DVD player, projectors and lighting system
What are we all about? Our programme is based upon three founding principles; Behaviours developed during childhood and early adolescence are predictors of adult behaviours. Children and adolescents are faced with all the challenges of developing their own identity. A need to fit in, a need to belong, a need to like the person in the mirror and be comfortable with who they are. Bullying, falling out with friends, the worry of being different and peer pressure are just some of the emotions growing children live with daily. Therefore, children and adolescents need to understand the development of their brain during puberty and the impact healthy choices during this time will have on their lives.
We are ‘a specialist health resource for schools’ Every year just over half of all primary and intermediate schools include Life Education in their teaching plan. Because we don’t have the resources to see all schools every year, some schools are on biennial visits which means over a two year period we are in 80% of schools – a phenomenal reach for one community organisation! • We’re aligned to the curriculum • Our educators are all registered, specialist teachers • There are five strands to our programme • Years 1 to 8 (5 to 13year olds) And we run parents sessions too!
And locally, what does this look like? We operate x mobile learning centres and last year we: • Taught xxxxx children from xxx schools • We operate in the xxxxx area etc and includes xx schools • We have xxx volunteer Trustees ** EXAMPLES of other information you could include here are: • History of the Trust • Trustee names if relevant (e.g. personal connection to donor or group) • Photos of the Trust in the community e.g. fundraising events, santa parade etc.
Our Request for support In 2012 Life Education Trust began developing our Digital Strategy. This was in response to the changing school classroom environment, but also how we can ensure we remain relevant and use technology as an asset to build stronger relationships with children: • Embrace the changes in the school classroom environment now, but also anticipating where this is heading • Ensure we engage with children and use technology to build a relationship with children beyond the mobile learning centre. But there is also a pressing practical need: The present operating system in our mobile learning centre was designed in 2003. It comprises of a specific control unit that operates the DVD, projectors , sound and lighting, together with things like our anatomical model, all controlled with a unique remote control. In 2003 this system cost $103,000 (plus GST) That eleven year old system is now at the end of its life and parts are becoming obsolete. We need to move now to update the components before reliability becomes a major issue. The new design that Life Education Trust (NZ) has developed has now been completed. Such is the advance of technology, the desire to only use off the shelf components that are common across many suppliers this 2014 upgrade cost is less than a third of the 2003 cost at $34,300
There are two parts to upgrading of our mobile learning centre 1. The hardware upgrade of the components in the mobile learning centre will enable us to utilise the software and learning tools and make them available to a child in their classroom and at home. Because it will enable 2. Our mobile learning centre to utilise the award winning software Life Education has created. Last year Hon. Amy Adams, Minister of Communications and Information Technology named Life Education as one of eight New Zealand finalists for the World Summit Awards. Life Education was nominated for its innovative way of using technology to teach health. That interactive technology uses Microsoft Kinect technology so children can manipulate the images on the screen, and be fully engaged with the learning experience. Importantly, it means as we develop our online content, the children can build upon the experiential lessons in the mobile learning centre to complete their lessons in the school classroom and at home. The content we create can be utilised online too.
Hon Amy Adams Minister for Communications and Information Technology Minister congratulates World Summit Award finalists Communications and Information Technology Minister Amy Adams has congratulated eight New Zealand organisations which have been selected as finalists in the global World Summit Awards for creativity and innovation in ICT. Covering categories ranging from entertainment and commerce to health and education, the awards are an opportunity to showcase New Zealand projects that are at the forefront of new media and e-content creation. The eight finalists are Digital NZ, Life Education Trust, Loomio, Māori Maps, Māori Television, Ponoko, Radio New Zealand and the Science Learning Hub. Ms Adams says the finalists demonstrate the potential for information and communications technology to stimulate innovation, increase productivity, and grow New Zealand’s international profile. “It is great to see New Zealand projects of this calibre being recognised on the world stage. It is particularly important that we celebrate and encourage the high level of innovation and creativity that we have in this country,” Ms Adams says. The Government’s broadband initiatives will increasingly support new uses of ICT by New Zealand companies and organisations, which will in turn drive the future uptake of faster broadband, Ms Adams says. New Zealand has participated in the World Summit Awards since 2003. This year’s winners will be announced after final judging takes place in Estonia in late October.
