  1. Aim: How can we break down the Historical Context and Task of the DBQ directions? • Do Now: What was the transcontinental railroad? Why was is important for the United States?

  2. I. Historical Context • Background information • Use ideas from here to start your introduction • Avoid using specific details and examples in the introduction • Don’t just re-write the historical context

  3. II. Task • What to argue/prove in the essay • Use similar words to write your thesis statement – make the bullet points into a clear sentence • Thesis should explain what you are going to prove in the essay

  4. Aim: How can we write an effective thesis statement from the task? • Do Now: • Take out your DBQ short answer packets

TASK: Discuss the dangerous working conditions of children during the late 1800s and early 1900s and describe the actions taken to improve the lives of child workers during this period • THESIS: Throughout the late 1800s and the early 1900s, children faced dangerous conditions in the places where they worked and as a result, groups of people took action to improve children’s lives.

  6. TASK: • Discuss two ways in which women historically have not had the same rights as men • Identify and discuss two individuals, groups and/or events that have helped women in their struggle for equal rights

  7. THESIS: Throughout history, women have not had the same rights as men, however, certain people and events have helped women in their struggle to gain equal rights

  8. TASK: • Discuss the reasons immigrants came to the United States • Discuss hardships (challenges) faced by immigrants after they arrived in the United States

  9. THESIS: Immigrants came to the United States for many different reasons and once they arrived in the country, they faced many hardships.

  10. TASK: • Discuss ways in which African Americans have been denied equal rights • Discuss methods that individuals, groups and/or the government have used since 1950 to deal with the inequality faced by African Americans

  11. THESIS: African Americans have been denied equal rights in many different ways, however, certain people and the government have used different methods to deal with this inequality since 1950.

  12. TASK: • Discuss the problems Americans faced during the Great Depression • Discuss actions take by the government and/or various groups and/or individuals in an attempt to solved the problems brought about by the Great Depression

  13. THESIS: Americans faced many problems during the Great Depression but certain people and the government took steps in an attempt to solve the problems brought about by the Great Depression.

Do Now: Read the following TASK and write a thesis statement – • Explain two actions of the British government toward American colonies after 1763 • Discuss why American colonists were unhappy with the British government • Describe two different reactions of the colonists that showed they were unhappy with the British

  15. THESIS: After 1763, the British government took actions that made the American colonists unhappy. As a result, American colonists reacted in different ways to show they were unhappy with the British.
