  5. Legal Encyclopedias • Collection of legal information arranged alphabetically by topic • There are two major legal encyclopedias • American Jurisprudence 2d (Am. Jur. 2d) • Corpus Juris Secundum (C.J.S.)

  6. Using Legal Encyclopedias • Start with the index • Determine terms to check • Review subtopics under main topic • Note topic and section numbers • Go to the volume and find the appropriate section

  7. American Law Reports • Uses recent cases which are then fully annotated • Cases • Statutes • Two types: • A.L.R. • A.L.R. Fed.

  8. Table of Contents Research References Research Sources Includes electronic search query Descriptive Word Index Jurisdictional Table of Cited Statutes and Cases Related Annotations Summary and Comment Practice Pointers Substantive Section American Law ReportsFeatures

  9. Treatises • Single book or multivolume series dealing with a single legal topic • Usually written by a legal scholar or attorney specialist in the field • Hornbooks are treatises published by West and used primarily by law students • Nutshell Series books are condensed versions of hornbooks

  11. Looseleaf Services • Published in binder form • Commonly used regarding administrative regulations • Allows for frequent supplementation without the use or need for pocket parts
