  1. Ocean Floor Adventure By: Aaron Chu Daniel Johnson

  2. Trench • Trench: A cut in the ground • Can be up to 7300 or more meters deep • Typically form in locations where tectonic plates subduct under another • Parallel to adjacent island arcs or mountain ranges of the continental margins • Closely associated with and found in subduction zones

  3. Our adventure begins!

  4. Day 1 Mariana Trench

  5. Deepest part of the earth • 11,000 meters deep • Formed by ocean-to-ocean subduction • 1 plate (piece of lithosphere) moves underneath another • Located in the Pacific Ocean • East of the 14 Mariana Islands • 11"21' North latitude and 142" 12' East longitude (near Japan)

  6. The trench is deep enough that Mt. Everest could fit in its place

  7. Jellyfish Football Fish Scary Dragonfish

  8. Day 2Izu Bonin-Mariana Arc

  9. Izu-Bonin-Mariana Arc

  10. Izu-Bonin-Mariana Arc • Volcanic island arc • 2800 km south from Tokyo • 1100 km long and 300 to 400 km wide • Contains • Izu Islands , Bonin Islands, and Mariana Islands • Convergent boundary • Crust is destroyed and recycled back into the interior of the Earth as one plate dives under another • Often known as “Subduction zones” • Formed as a result of subductionof the western Pacific plate

  11. To Iceland!

  12. Day 3Iceland

  13. Iceland Divergent plate • Mid-Atlantic Ridge runs beneath Iceland • North American Plate moves west, while the Eurasian Plate moves east • Iceland is slowly being split in 2 pieces • Result of this is divergent boundary • New crust is created as 2or more plates pull away from each other.

  14. Mid-Ocean Ridge • Mid-Ocean ridge • Underwater mountain range, formed by plate tectonics • Seafloor spreading occurs during this process • Process in which the ocean floor is extended when two playesmove apart. • Mid-Atlantic Ridge includes a deep rift valley • Runs along the axis of the ridge along nearly its entire length

  15. Mid-Atlantic ridge • 65,000 kilometers • Between 22° and 23°N and 44°30′ to 46°20′W • Formed by the movement of the Earth's tectonic plates.

  16. The ridge played an important in the break up of Pangaea

  17. Short Clip(Mid- Atlantic Ridge)

  18. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxV3vE86s2Q

  19. Paleomagnetism • Paleomagnetism • Study of the record of the Earth’s magnetic field in rocks. • Paleomagnetistsstudy the Paleomagneticstripes in the mid ocean ridge to see the.. • Iron rich basaltic lava erupted along mid-ocean ridges • Iron within the basalt is permanently oriented by the magnetic field of the Earth

  20. Day 4 California

  21. Cascade Volcanoes' • Cascade Volcanoes • Extends about 1,100km • Formed due to subductionalong the Cascadia subduction zone • Series of volcanoes in North America • Extends from southwestern British Colombia through Washington and Oregon to Northern California

  22. Volcanic Arc • Cascade Volcanoes' = Volcanic arc’s • Volcanic Arc • Chain of volcanoes positioned in an arc • 2 types • Oceanic arcs: forms when oceanic crust subducts beneath another oceanic crust • Continental arcs:forms when oceanic crust subducts beneath continental, creating an arc-shaped mountain belt

  23. San Andreas Short Film

  24. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKmJEVZDI6c

  25. San Andreas Fault • In California lays the San Andreas fault • 800 mi. long • Tectonic boundary between the Pacific plate and the North Atlantic plate • 35°07'N, 119°39'W • The fault is a transformation fault boundary

  26. Transformation-fault boundary • Transformation-fault boundary • 2 plates are sliding horizontally past one another. • Usually appear in ocean floors but a few occur on land such as California

  27. The end!!
