Areas managed mainly for: - Conservation of biodiversity and habitat - Protect species or populations - Fishery management - Scientific knowledge - Education, recreation and tourism In the W Mediterranean (mainly from 1980’s): - Multiple-use and diverse. Most of them to restore fisheries - Highest number in European waters - ECOMARE, EU Project. Environ. Conservation, 27(2). 2000
