  1. uWaterloo’s Move to D2L:Reactions, Observations, … and Questions Ontario D2L eLearning Event 14 October 2011

  2. Where we were and are • 7+ years on ANGEL (purchased by Blackboard in May 2009) • Investigation and RFP – Fall 2009 to Fall 2010 • Selected D2L LE, ePortfolio, LOR in Mar. 2011 • 11 courses in pilot in May – August • 300+ courses this fall • Full move to D2L in winter 2012

  3. General reactions to D2L • Hear of clean & modern look, ease to navigate • Powerful admin tools • Lower than expected support incidents from students and instructors • Wider range of supported browsers • Getting familiar with Waterloo/D2L support in transition from implementation to production

  4. What we/you are doing for … • Roles management • Training instructors • Communication with instructors • Email best practices • Getting data • LOR uses • Other assorted topics

  5. Roles Management • Observation • It really is a carpal tunnel page! • Questions: • How many roles do you have? • For what do you use cascading? • How do you track roles and their permissions, especially with dependencies? • Sharing idea: Roles repository

  6. Roles – what we do • Mapped needs starting from ANGEL roles • Established the role hierarchy • E.g. of cascading: Faculty Liaison support • Wrecked wrists and bloodshot eyes in carefully going through roles/permissions • Learning, listening, responding to needs as role-related topics arise (e.g., test student) • Want to keep roles to a minimum!

  7. Training for instructors • Observation • Community site materials provide a guideline and need to be augmented. • Questions: • What do you use for training materials? • Are your instructors in the D2L Community? • Other communications: newsletters, websites, listservs, etc? • Sharing idea: Training materials repository

  8. Training – what we do • Collaborative effort between tech (IST), pedagogy (CTE), fully online (CEL) groups. • Creating our own documents based on Community docs as starting point • Creating self-serve screen capture video with audio overlay • Offered overview of D2L LE • Will offer special topics (e.g., Grade book)

  9. Email • Observation • Course-only or full email means two addresses • Concern about confusion (also against Waterloo guidelines) regarding 2nd email address • Sent-only email – delivery problems • Questions: • What email config are you using (sent-only/external, course-only/internal, or full)? • Any one else using sent-only/external email?! • Sharing idea: Shoulders to cry on? 

  10. Email – what we (will?) do • Currently set to sent-only (external) • Plan: • Set to course-only (internal) • Force forwarding from every student account to uWaterloo address (user@uwaterloo.ca) • Don’t allow student to change address or forwarding in D2L (forwarding done in directory) • Intended result: Record outgoing email in D2LSent folder but all email sent external

  11. Getting Data from LE • Observation • Hosted, can’t access dbto run special queries • Questions: • What reports do you regularly use/find useful? • What additional data do you collect, and how? (Special reports through D2L consultations?) • Use Analytics? Does it address the above? • Sharing idea: Data collecting/Analytics grp

  12. LOR • Observations: • D2L LOR very different model from ANGEL • “Wild west” + separate controlled/approve area • Departmental LORs • Questions: • How are you managing metadata? • (How) Are Librarians involved? • Other LOR connections, such as MERLOT? • Sharing idea: LOR Users Group; federated LORs?

  13. Other mutual interest ideas • “Consistency” groups: E.g., Navbar policy • Use of other D2L products: ePortfolio, Capture, Analytics, Mobile • Integrations: iTunes U, eReserves, iClicker, Maple TA, etc. • Migration tools and strategies • Staffing for support • Getting feedback from students, instructors

  14. We would love to play together  • Would you like to collaborate on topics? • Perhaps mailing lists or Community area for: • Roles • Training • Email • Getting data/Analytics • LOR • Other topics(previous slide as examples)

  15. Call, write, visit! Thanks for your attention and we look forward to getting together again. andrea.chappell@uwaterloo.cadavid.bean@uwaterloo.cajan@uwaterloo.ca Questions? Comments?
