  1. Four Ways To Talking to a Loved One With a Drinking Problem 1. Talk to them when they are sober The best time to talk to a person with a drinking problem is when they are sober. This is because they are in their right mind and they are able to reason on matters much better compared to when they are intoxicated. If a major problem arose due to drinking, talk to the person a day or two after the incident since it will still be fresh in the mind. 2. Speak at the right time Even when the person is sober, you still need to look for the right time to speak about the drinking problem. Look for a time when they are relaxed and in a position to talk. Avoid talking to them about the matter when they are stressed or in a state of anger since this will not bear any fruit. 3. Consider the negative effects While talking to the person about the drinking problem, bring to their attention some of the negative effects their drinking has had on family and friends. Relate an incident that happened recently. Do not wait too long after an incident to speak to them about their problem. As you consider the negative impact their drinking has had, do not talk to them in a manner that seems like you are attacking them. You could use words such as "Our children feel really sad when they see you in that state". Avoid lecturing them since this will create a wall and you will not manage to get your point across. 4. Offer to assist them If they accept to get help, provide them with assistance such as driving them to the treatment center, emotional support and anything else they may require.
