Germany’s Changing Chapter 10 Section 1
Napoleon & Germany • Napoleon ventured into Germany numerous times= taking more land. • Napoleon annexed lands, dissolved Holy Roman Empire, and organized German states into the Rhine Confederation. • How would this make people in those German states feel?
Prussia wants to build a strong unified Germany Empire, an empire which Prussia could lead. Why would it be beneficial for Prussia for Germany to be strong?
* Each state had their own kind of government structure. * To unify these states meant to get rid of those structures and create a new one.
Prussia created an economic union called Zollverein.Barriers between German states were dismantled.
Otto Von Bismarck • Born into Prussia’s Junker class- Conservative land owning nobles.
Prussia did have a King- King William IWilliam was king but a puppet to Bismarck.
Bismarck • 1867 Bismarck became Chancellor (North German Confederation)& prime minister of Prussia.
Realpolitik= was realistic politics based on the needs of the state.
Bismarck built up the Prussian army. • Bismarck was ready to have an aggressive foreign policy.
Main Events : • 1 Bismarck first formed an alliance with Austria in 1864. Bismarck and Austria went after Schleswig and Holstein from Denmark. These areas were liberated.
2 In 1866 Bismarck attacked Austria • Austria Prussian War lasted 7 weeks. • Prussian victory.
3 Prussia then annexed other German states. • Bismarck got rid of the German Confederation (that involved Austria) and replaced it with a German Confederation that was controlled and regulated by Prussia.

Franco-Prussian War 1870. • CAUSE: • Bismarck played up the invasions of Napoleon I to instill fear. • Bismarck wanted to start a war; he misprinted information making it seem like King William I had insulted the French ambassador.
EFFECT: • Result was that Napoleon III (nephew to Napoleon I) declared war. • France lost horribly.
William I eventually took title of Kaiser or emperor of Germany.
January 1871 German nationalists celebrated the Second Reich or empire. • Bismarck drafted a-2 house legislature. • 1 Bundesrat (upper house) appointed rulers of German states. • 2 Reichstag (lower house) elected by universal male suffrage
