What are Chemical Properties? • A chemical property describes the ability of a substance to change into a new substance or substances through a chemical reaction. • This includes: • How a substance interacts with other substances • How a substance reacts when exposed to heat or light
What is Chemical Change? • A chemical change means that a chemical reaction has occurred and as a result we have a new substance or substances • Example: • If you combine baking soda and vinegar you will produce a chemical reaction that produces gas bubbles (CO2) and water!
Types of Chemical Properties • Absorbs heat during a reaction • Combustible • Forms gas • Reacts with acid • Reacts with water • Emits heat during reaction • Emits light during a reaction • Forms a precipitate (solid) in a solution
Heat and Chemical Change • Sometimes when we add heat to a substance it undergoes a chemical change • When baking powder is heated, it produces CO2 • This is what makes cakes light and fluffy! • Burning is another example of chemical change • Paper will burst into flame when heated above a certain temperature!
Combustibility • The ability of a substance to react quickly with oxygen to produce heat and light. • Or in other words…the ability of a substance to BURN!
How do chemical cold packs get cold? • A chemical cold pack is a sack full of water that has an inner compartment tube that is filled with chemicals (Ammonium Nitrate). • When you break the tube inside, the chemicals mix with the water and create a reactions that removes heat from its surroundings. • This makes the pack feel COLD!!
