Social Skills Training for Elementary Students on the Autism Spectrum Jill McMullin (jill.mcmullin@nbed.nb.ca) Autism Resource Teacher Anglophone School District-South St. Stephen Education Centre (New Brunswick)
Getting Started: • Data Collection – social skills assessment (teachers/parents/educational assistants) • Cross reference the data to determine what skills to target. • Permission letter for parents. • Create positive incentive materials – choice board; point system; token economy; First-Then card.
Components of Lesson Structured learning consists of four teaching components: • Didactic instruction (explanation of the skill steps). • Modeling of skill steps. • Role-playing skills with feedback. • Practice in and outside the group.
Promoting Generalization • One of the goals of skills training is to improve social functioning outside the group. • It is constant repetition of a skill in real situations that facilitate learning. • Role-plays conducted in groups. • Instructions to practice outside the group. • Involve parents. • Involve Teachers. • Create instances to reward.
