  11. NGN and ITU-D Hyderabad Action Plan (HAP) ITU-D Activities on NGN Study Period 2010-2014 NGN is one of the Priority areas of the HAP - Programme 1: Information and Communication Infrastructure and Technology Development

Q.26/2:Migration from existing networks to next-generation networks for developing countries: technical, regulatory and policy aspects ISSUES FOR STUDY • Trends of telecommunication networks towards NGN • Examination of NGN technologies, Migration solutions to NGN (ITU-T SG13 works on NGN) • Interconnection for NGN, technical and regulatory aspects OUTPUT Report on studies of various issues related to migration from existing networks to next-generation networks and among others the description of the technical, legislative and regulatory framework that would be needed to implement appropriate interconnection arrangements for new generation networks. Economic impact to implement these interconnection arrangements are also to be reported • The main Report and respective Annexes http://www.itu.int/md/D10-SG02-C-0278were approved  by the fourth and final ITU-D SG 2 meeting of the current study (Sep/13)

ITU-D Study Group 2 Question 10-3/2: Telecommunications/ICTs for rural and remote areas • Technologies for connecting rural and remote areas (optical fibres, wireless, satellites, …etc.) • Analysis of selected case studies • Questionnaire sent to members (Results available in annex of Final Report)

Recognizing the role of mobile applications in stimulating supply and creating demand , ITU and MOIC Bhutan prioritized four key mobile applications (i) m-health (ii) m-agriculture (iii) m-disaster management and (iv) m-banking; Comprehensive report on development of four mobile applications was prepared In close coordination with responsible line ministries , four Mobile applications have been developed and currently under deployment stage.   31. Asia-Pacific Information Superhighway Maps ESCAP and ITU have jointly produced groundbreaking new interactive maps of the Global Information Superhighway, which will help bridge the digital divide in Asia-Pacific. Maps are first ever to show policy makers and investors where the missing links in terrestrial transmission are across the region, assisting affordable broadband connectivity

Only 7% of people in Asia Pacific have fixed broadband access and it is the most digitally divided region in the world, with Republic of Korea at 37.56% fixed broadband penetration, compared to Myanmar (0.01%) Mapping regional terrestrial routes will offer opportunities for policy makers and investors on missing links to development of a coherent Asia-Pacific Information Superhighway.

Asia-Pacific Information Superhighway Maps The maps also feature the region’s main transport networks, the Asian Highway and the Trans-Asian Railways as it is critical that fiber-optic cables can be laid in coordination with the construction of railways and roads to ensure appropriate cost savings.
