Patricia Smith on the Voodoo Poems “I felt like I couldn't write from the textured cultural tapestry of the Gulf Region without paying tribute to the role of voodoo in its storied past. The poem started out as a single poem with several parts. Both editors and friends I asked to read the manuscript suggested that it didn't really fit in the manuscript until it was decided to break it up throughout the book. The consensus was that the book needed breath.”
