  5. Glacial Retreat These two images show Portage Glacier, near Anchorage, Alaska, in about 1950 and in July 2001. The ice has pulled back nearly out of sight, leaving behind a glacial lake.

Why is oil so important?What do we use oil for? • Our entire way of life, and a bewildering array of products are reliant on oil. • Transport is only the beginning of our oil dependency. • Many products are derived from, or use oil, or gas as their raw material. Plastics, synthetic fibres, drugs, laminates, paints, ink… the list is near endless

Why is oil so important?What do we use oil for? • The so called ‘Green revolution’, our modern industrial food production systems are entirely dependant on cheap easy to extract oil. • Fertilisers and pesticides are made from oil and natural gas, tractors and machinery use it, irrigation requires huge amounts of energy and this is before food miles, processing and storing, cooking, and packaging and retailing are taken into account. • 99% of all Industry and even the service sector use huge amounts of cheap available energy.
