Falling and Floating investigationhttp://videos.howstuffworks.com/hsw/8477-exploring-gravity-surface-area-and-falling-objects-video.htm
Video link • Start with the video link and just ask them to watch and think about what they see • Starter activity sheet – falling and floating • Selection of items that could fall and float get them to try out in pairs/fours and record their results (this is the idea of a preliminary investigation • After you have completed each task ask them what they think is happening, get them to explain what they understand
Falling faster and slower • Ask does everything fall at the same speed? • Ask them what could make something fall more quickly or could they slow it down? • With these questions have a flipchart and get pupils to be involved in recording their peers ideas
Show them the sycamore seed remind them they had this picture in the starter activity sheet Ask them why it floats? WINGS Do wings make a difference? Wings
Explain to them that you are going to find out if wings make a difference At this point give each pupil a post-it note Ask them to write on their post- it what they think wings do? (differentiation possibility) Get them to stick their post- its up around the room Tell they are going to make a sycamore spinner Show them a spinner already made (10 cm wing length) Ask them what they think about the wing length? Too long Too short Making Helicopters
How does changing the wing length effect the time it takes for the spinner to reach the ground? • In a group of four get them to map out ideas on a piece of A3 paper how they could use the work they have done today and their own knowledge to solve this problem • 15 minutes
