The characters in both these stories feel compelled to move and discover. An equal number, however, long to root and nurture. • Both of these are American impulses. • Example: Stay or Go?
What are examples of restlessness and rootedness? • Restlessness is shown vividly in the descriptions of the wild race of cars rushing north and Hernando’s memories of obnoxious tourists. In the crashed car and the items (the tires and hub lid) flung off of racing vehicles (which, significantly, Hernando uses for shoes and a bowl) The car full of distressed young people trying desperately to get home is also an image of restlessness.
