1st migration • Ice Age hunters crossed the Bering land bridge from Siberia to what is now Alaska
Europeans arrive • 15th & 16th centuries • Christopher Columbus • Francisco Vasquez • Wrote letters journals and books • Said America had abundant resources, peaceful inhabitants, and wealth to be gained.
Puritan landing • First group in 1620 • 10 years later- 700 more • 1640- 20,000 English Puritans
What’s a Puritan? • A number of protestant groups that sought to purify the church of England • Wanted to return to simpler forms of worship and church organization • Persecuted in England (noses slit, ears lopped off)
Beliefs • Religion is personal • Clergy or government shouldn’t/couldn’t act as an intermediary between the individual and God • Valued self reliance, industriousness, temperance, and simplicity • Saved or damned? WHO KNOWS?! • You could “feel” grace arriving • Used contracts for both eternal and worldly organization • Life is a journey (pilgrimage) to salvation • Read the Bible daily • Fun fact: Harvard was intended to train Puritan ministers to help others read the Bible in the rapidly expanding colony
