Inner planets • The inner planets are the planets on the inside of the solar system then orbit closest to the sun. there are 4 inner planets they are: • Mercury • Venus • Earth • Mars • They are composed largely of refectory, minerals, such as the silicates which form their crusts and mantles, and metals such as iron and nickel, which form their cores. The inner planets were also well known to the ancient astronomers as they made up the majority of the “wandering” objects visible in the night sky that moved against the fixed stars.
Outer planets • The "outer planets“ refers to the four farthest planets from the Sun • Jupiter • Saturn • Uranus • Neptune • They are also sometimes known as the Gas Giants. They are much bigger than the inner planets. Also they are made mostly of hydrogen and helium. Each of these huge planets has its own system of moons and also has rings.
Inner vs. Outer There are many differences between the inner and outer planets besides their location. inner Outer • Mostly composed of rock • Greater density • Few or no rings or moons. • Orbit sun quickly • Known by ancients • Spin slowly • Multiple space craft visitors • Gas giants • Dozen of satellites • Dozens of rings • larger • Similar atmospheres • Smaller density • One or fewer visiting's by space craft
Pluto Pluto, once considered the ninth planet, is currently classed as a dwarf planet. Pluto's size compared to it's moon, Charon, is not big enough. Pluto's size issue with it's moon causes problems with domination. This means it does not meet the condition of being the most dominant mass in its orbit.
