Summary of Hebrews Ch 1 • Characteristics of Jesus / Revelation through the Son (vv1-4) • Proof that Jesus is superior to the angels (vv5-end)
Memory Verse - Hebrews Ch 1 Heb1:3a
Memory Verse - Hebrews Ch 1 Heb1:3a “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful word.”
Heb 2:1 • Pay attention = prosechein = to fix, or moor, a ship. • Drift away = pararrein = slip away by careless inattention • as a boat that slips away with the tides or is improperly anchored.
Heb2:3-4 • Acts 7:38 “He was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors; and he received living words to pass on to us.” • Acts 7:53 “you who have received the law that was given through angels but have not obeyed it.” • Gal 3:19b “The law was given through angels and entrusted to a mediator.”
Heb2:3-4 • Violation = parabasis = stepping out of line; rebellion. • Disobedience = parakoe = not listening well or being unwilling to listen.
Heb2:5 • The word translated “world to come” is the same word (oikoumene) translated “world” in Heb 1:6 • Heb1:6 “And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, ‘Let all God’s angels worship him.’” • The word for the earthly creation (kosmos) was NOT used.
Commentary on Heb 2:5-9 1 Cor 6:3 “Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life!”
Heb2:10 • Being made perfect = completing the task God gave Him, not moral perfection. • Because He completed His task by submitting to suffering and thus obeying God, He is able to make us perfect (mature and submitted to God’s will) as well. • Heb10:14 “For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.” • Mt 5:48 “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” • Jesus is saying “Grow Up!”
Commentary on Heb 2:15 1 Cor 15:54-57 “When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Commentary on Heb 2:17-18 Lev 16:32-34 “The priest who is anointed and ordained to succeed his father as high priest is to make atonement. He is to put on the sacred linen garments and make atonement for the Most Holy Place, for the tent of meeting and the altar, and for the priests and all the members of the community. This is to be a lasting ordinance for you: Atonement is to be made once a year for all the sins of the Israelites.”
