GOFIRST • FIRST Support Organization at the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities • Mentors FRC Teams • Volunteers at FRC Events • Hosts FRC Events • Participate in collegiate robots competitions
What is a Mock Kick-Off? • Kicks off an old FRC game • New teams members learn what Kick-Off is • Veteran team members go over design process • GOFIRST Mock Kick Off (MoKo) • Fast-paced 5 hour event • Focuses on team building and design processes
Brainstorm ideas • Be specific • Chose functions and rank them • What the robot Does, not How • Keep Strategy in mind Black Box Design Process
Things the robot MUST do! • First must be able to build it • Pass Inspection • Read the rule book many times each season! • Move • Thing? Requirements/Needs
Things you WANT the robot todo! • Matches robot to your desired strategy • Complete more complex tasks • Makes you more competitive • Moves your team forward • Be aware of the Deadline! Objectives/Wants
Things that pull in opposite directions • Speed vs. Torque (Pushing Power) • Weight vs. Complexity • High reach vs. low center of gravity Trade-ables
Requirements Objectives • Your team must be able to build it • Pass Inspection The LIST of Functions Move Thing? Thing Thing Thing
FIRST’s site • Game Manual! • Q&A Forum • Chief Delphi- www.chiefdelphi.com • The Blue Alliance- www.thebluealliance.com • Scouting Data- www.simbotics.org/resources/scouting-database • GOFIRST- gofirst@umn.edu • Other Teams • Search the Internet- www.google.com Resources
Kickoff vs. Moko • What happens at Kickoff? • Game release video • Game manual code released • Field interaction video • Kit of part pickup • Go through checklist • Examine field elements (maybe) • Mockups built – close, not exact

Requirements Objectives • Your team must be able to build it • Pass Inspection Move Thing? Thing Thing Thing The LIST of Functions
Conceptualization • Start Thinking of Robot Designs! • Start by thinking of some designs alone • State how it does stuff • Then work with your table to pick a design • DO NOT GET EMOTIONALLY ATTACHED • Don’t say “Because I want to” or “Because another team did it” January 9th, 2013
Critical Design Review • Work with the table next to you to review your designs • Look for possible flaws • Did they meet their requirements? • Go through their list number by number • How did the team meet each one? • Why did they make those choices?
BUILD • Welcome to your primary design! • Change based on prototype results • Watch out for ship date • Be aware of unexpected problems • Snow days • Parts not shipping/arriving on time • Rules Updates!!! • Pre-Ship Regional(s) January 13th, 2013
