Services & Activities • Academic support • Summer bridge program • University 101 class • Campus & community engagement • Research • “High impact” activities
“High Impact” Activities Correlated with student success: engages students, connects them with campus & others Research projects Internships Community & campus service On-campus employment Goal: 46students annually
On-campus employment • Ineligibility for Work-Study • High unmet financial need • Difficulty in obtaining on-campus jobs due to competition, lack of experience, lack of jobs (level student employment budget for many years despite increased enrollment), etc. • Off-campus employment may lead to dropping out
Hiring Process • RCUH (not UH) • You provide job title, description & hourly pay rate • We provide pool of eligible students; you select from pool • We work with RCUH to get student approved to start working • You determine number of hours per week student will work; work schedule set between you & student; student begins working
Employers’ Responsibilities • THANK YOU! • Provide a learning & training experience • Have high expectations of employees • Hold employees accountable • Provide feedback (timely & frequent) • Monitor expenditures • Authorize students’ pay by signing timesheets
Student Employees’ Responsibilities • Engage in the work experience • Learn and gain experience • Submit timesheets by deadline • Remain in good academic standing • Discussing monitoring students’ academic progress & establishing conditions/criteria that students would need to meet to continue working
1st Allocation:January – June 30, 2012 • How much do you plan to expend by the end of the June 30 pay period?
2nd Allocation:July 1 – August 15, 2012 • How much funds would you like to request for the remainder of the summer? • Note I originally said August 12, but changing it to August 15 to match RCUH pay periods
Next School Year Allocation:August 16, 2012 – May 15, 2013 • How much would you like to request for next school year? • Note that I originally said from August 13, 2012 to May 17, 2013, but changing dates slightly to match RCUH pay periods
Process • Provided a form for you • Need response by June 12 • Review expenditures & requests for funding • Notify you as soon as possible
Guidelines • 20 hours/week maximum when school is in session; 40 hours/week maximum during breaks • Number of hours you schedule student to work depends on the amount of funds you are allocated • FICA: Does not apply to RCUH employees • Let us know about changes, e.g., student graduates, goes home for summer, quits, etc. • Discuss problems with us early on if they arise • Role of Mary Jo at RCUH
Timesheets • Deadlines • Student receives timesheet via email at the beginning of each pay period; completes it and obtains supervisor’s signature • Timesheet must be emailed or faxed to RCUH by deadline, and original copy must be dropped off in PB 14-6 • Direct deposit only
