My Expectations • I wanted to learn how to design a web page. • I wanted to incorporate technology into a standards-based lesson. • I wanted to learn PowerPoint, Excel, and Netscape Composer. • Most importantly, I wanted to share this new learning with my students and peers.
Actual Learning • I learned: • perseverance • how to design a web page using Netscape Composer. • incorporate the Internet and computer technology in a lesson. • teach basic computer skills to my students.
Successes • My students learned how to access the Internet. They learned how to move between pages, search for topics, save to favorites, use PowerPoint. • My students stayed engaged, on task, and focused throughout the lesson. • My students learned the computer is a tool to aid learning, and not just a big computer game. • I was able to teach my students what I learned.
Shortcomings • Time – It took me a while to figure out how the web site and lesson could work together. Then, the actual implementation took more time than expected. • My school does not have a computer lab. • I have three computers with Internet access, which obviously makes group lessons difficult. • Only three of my students have computers at home. • Almost none had ever used the Internet before. • Teaching basic computer skills and vocabulary slowed down lessons and projects.
Student Data The average pretest score was 45 percent. The average post-test score was 100 percent. All students completed the culminating activity.
Revisions • Each lesson took longer to implement than expected, so some extension activities were deleted. • After implementing the lesson, I went back to the teacher page and revised the order of activities. • I also redesigned some of the worksheet documents so that they were more kid-friendly. • I also revised the family survey questions because there were some parents who had difficulty filling it out.
Closing Statements • Using the computer engages all students because it taps into almost all learning styles simultaneously. • Using the Internet makes people and places come alive for students. • A standards-based lesson focuses instruction. • The wealth of easily accessed information on the Internet and the availability of multi-media applications makes using technology a good resource. • The biggest hindrance to using technology in the classroom is lack of teacher training and available equipment. • I am ready to design another standards- and technology-based lesson.
