Introduction • QTI (Query & Test Interoperability) is the IMS specification for assessment • Last versions: • QTI 2.0: items (questions) • QTI 2.1: tests • Need for open source service-based implementations: • Authoring tools • Management systems (engines/players)
APIS engine • Assessment Provision through Interoperable Segments • Supports QTI 2.0, but only some types of interaction (types of questions) • Web Services-based interface Developed by University of Strathclyde • JISC Project: • http://www.jisc.ac.uk/whatwedo/projects/apis.aspx • Available at SourceForge: • http://sourceforge.net/projects/apis/
General structure Assessment item (XML file) Browser Feedback 2 XHTML APIS 1
Objective of our work • Extend APIS to support: • More interactions types (types of questions) • More datatypes (of variables) • More types of expessions (to obtain the corresponding result) • Assessment tests (QTI 2.1): • Internal structure of tests: sections and parts • Processing the outcome for the whole test
New interactions (types of items) Associate Interaction Gap_match Interaction
New interactions (types of items) Match Interaction Order Interaction
INTERACTION TYPE IMPLEMENTED NOT IMPLEMENTED New interactions (types of items)
New supported data types IMPLEMENTED NOT IMPLEMENTED
IMPLEMENTED NOT IMPLEMENTED New supported expressions

Future work (I) • Integration of assessment into learning activities • Integration of new APIS with SLED (through CCSI) • Integration of assessment tests in the workflow of LD Units of Learning • Determining different learning paths according to assessment outcomes Source: SLED website http://sled.open.ac.uk/web/tech/ccsi.jsp
Future work (II) • Development of a graphical editor of items and tests for QTI 2.1 • Previous work: QAEd for QTILite, which also provides other functionalities: • Management of a bank of items • Classification of items • Search • http://gti.upf.edu/leteos/newnavs/qaed.html
