Votive bread for St. Isidoro In Sicily, people are devoted St Isidoro, the patron of farmers. They celebrated him on the 15th May.
Bread was usually prepared from people asking for help to the Saint to have a good fodder crop, wheat, barley and oats. It was an unleavened bread that is made without yeast.They prepared a thin sheet of durum wheat and put on decorations also made of pasta: birds, flowers, fruit, cherubs, leaves and real animals.
Then it was put in the oven without drying it out to take color.This type of bread, generally was not eaten, but was carried in processions to be blessed. After you cut it into pieces, you gave to family and friends that were in their home as a sacred thing.
They were wonderful masterpieces, many people collaborated in the preparation , but especially the most talented and most original housewives .The tradition still persists today .The preparation of the bread was a strong moment of social interaction, exchange of products of labor, solidarity.
