Session goals • Overarching Goal: Give you a better sense of how Performance Tasks and Assessments can be used in YOUR classroom. • Build understanding of the direction Smarter Balanced Assessments are moving. • Begin to answer the question: “How does High School Common Core Math Instruction look in a classroom?” • Deepen your understanding of how to use these tasks as part of your instructional repertoire to overarch the Eight Mathematical Practices. • Clarify the true meaning of Formative Assessments.
Performance tasks • Will be part of Smarter Balanced • Depth of Knowledge Levels 3 and 4 • Purpose: To inform instruction: (formatively assess) • In what areas and types of thinking are students doing well? • In what areas and types of thinking are students facing challenges? • Administered without prior instruction on the specific task. *Except for help with vocabulary. • Be open to imperfect execution both from students and from yourselves.
Performance tasks: • Performance Task #1: Look at things Differently • Unit:Solving Equations with One Variable • Performance Task #2: The Answer is 52 • Unit: Review of any Unit • Performance Task #3: Matching Algebraic Expressions • Unit:Functions
#1: Look at things Differently Unit: Solving Equations with One Variable Prerequisites: Students already be familiar with Algebraic Operations Time: 20 minutes to 1 ½ days, depending on exploration.
#2: The Answer is 52 Unit: Review of any Unit Prerequisites: Familiarity with the strategies being used in the grid. Time: 20 to 30 minutes (depending on extension choices)
#2: The Answer Today is 52! • This activity can be altered to become, The Answer is
rubric • Points Sec. Pts.
#3: Matching Algebraic Expressions Unit: Functions Prerequisites: Ability to Recognize different ways to express data. Time: 2 Class Periods
Remember: Success comes from good choices.Good choices come from experience.Experience comes from Making Mistakes.
Match the Algebraic Expression with the correct words on the right. two four ?

Classroom practices: • MY FAVORITE NO • This video demonstrates an instructional strategy that can be used at all levels. While the class shown is a middle school Algebra 1 class, the process is easily adaptable to any level class. • https://www.teachingchannel.org/videos/class-warm-up-routine • First, have students find what is correct! • Next, find what is not and articulate what they did and what they should have been done. • Allows the students to be unafraid of getting something wrong. • This strategy allows for immediate re-teaching.
