  1. VICTIMS OF CRIME Sociology Study by Bragg, Young, Slaney & Passmore (Passmore et al)

  2. Our Aim To investigate which gender is most likely to be a victim of crime.

  3. Our Hypothesis We predict that females are more likely to be a victim of crime.

  4. Background Research We looked at official statistical data from previous years and found the following trends: • Men are victims of violent crime more often than women. • Women are more likely to be victims of domestic abuse. (“vulnerable”, “weaker”) • In the following table men are higher than women in everything except for domestic abuse. This general trend goes against our hypothesis

  5. What we did.. • Created a short questionnaire for people aged over 16 to fill in, from this we found which people (Male/ Female, Old/young) are victims of some certain crimes . • We handed out these questionnaires to students in the school and also the wider community.

  7. In total we had 46 respondents from inside and outside school across a variety of ages.

  8. Our Findings Victims by Gender:

  9. This bar chart shows that most victims were female who we asked. This support our hypothesis.

  11. This bar chart shows that women in the age brackets of: • 16 – 24 • 35 – 44 • 55 – 64 Were victims of crime more than the males in these age brackets. However in the age bracket of 45 – 54, both males and females were equal victims of crime. Also in the age bracket of 25 – 34 males were victims of crime more than females.

  13. This pie chart shows that the crimes males are most victims of are: • Assault with minor injury • Assault with no injury • Robbery and theft

  14. Also within the pie chart, no males said they had been a victim of: • Domestic abuse • Sexual Assault

  15. Two male respondents added other crimes that they had been victims of these were: • Domestic theft • Racial abuse

  17. This pie chart shows that crimes females are most victims of are: • Robbery and theft • Car theft • Accident not their fault

  18. Also shown within this pie chart: • 1 female said they had been a victim of sexual assault • No females said they had been a victim of domestic abuse

  19. The fact that no respondents said they had been a victim to domestic abuse, suggests that our study may not be very valid due to people feeling uncomfortable about revealing this information. That being said It may also be that none of our respondents had been abused domestically.

  20. Our hypothesis Overall our results support our hypothesis that females are victims of crime more often than males. This also contradicts the background research we did.
