  2. Centre for Freedom of the Media (CFOM): Why journalists should know about safety

  3. THE UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity • UN coordination among agencies and bodies • Actions by States with primary responsibility for guaranteeing freedom of expression and journalists’ safety • Mobilising efforts by IGOs, associations, media houses and academics

  4. Journalists safety and democratic life: journalism educators and the bigger picture • Attacks against journalists and impunity lead to self-censorship, loss of faith in the judicial system and undermine the rule of law. • Intimidation and controls on media make fraudulent elections more likely and are linked with increases in corruption, crime and human rights violations. • The unsafe environment in many countries requires review/reform of legislation; judicial independence; public engagement and concerted actions by stakeholders

  5. A role for journalism educators? The UN identifies a need • Promote inclusion of the issue of freedom of expression … (at university level), including the safety of journalists, in journalism education institutions • Partner with academic institutions and journalism programmes…to incorporate a module on the safety of journalists and impunity within the teaching curricula at under and post-graduate level. • To encourage journalism strategies that develop safety skills in investigative journalism, including data journalism
