ICE-breaking the Mold of Pre-service Teacher Education:Sharing Experiences of Creating, Implementing and Team-Teaching a Course on Imagination Creativity Education (ICE) Kathy Mantas PhD, Prof. Elizabeth Ashworth, Blaine Hatt PhD, Prof. Rob Graham, Prof. Anna-Marie Aquino
What is ICE? • A belief that all educators and learners possess the potential for imagination and creativity – ICE as pedagogy • A multi-disciplinary approach (including multiple literacies, numeracy, aesthetics, technology, special education) • A collaborative teaching and learning group and environment • A learner-centred approach • An option course for concurrent and consecutive pre-service teachers in Primary/Junior, Junior/Intermediate, Intermediate/Senior divisions
Our guiding metaphor… • Education is trying to balance on a two-legged stool: one leg for literacy and the other for numeracy • What is missing is a third leg - imagination and creativity – to achieve better balance -Dr. Blaine Hatt
Our guiding questions… • How were pre-service teachers’ perceptions and reflections of imagination and creativity influenced by participating in this course? • What factors contributed to the pre-service teachers’ perceptions of imagination creativity education (ICE) • Will these experiences influence future pedagogical practice? If so, how? • Did our team-teaching and integrated approach encourage our pre-service teachers to take risks, innovate, foster, and promote imagination and creativity in their teaching and learning? If so, how?
Course assignments… • Metaphors of inquiry • What if? • Point of view • Practicum reflection • Final project (student-led; student-created rubric)
Barriers… Bridges… • Team-teaching • Overload • Evening timeslot • Time (meeting, marking, planning) • Funding/resources • Number of assignments • Technology • Physical environment • Transportation • Team-teaching • Multiple perspectives • Diversity of students • Small class size • Exemplary performance • Professional development • Choice • Available technology • Alternative locations
Impact on our practice… • Team teaching/Synergy • Collaborating (research) • Challenging our assumptions about teaching and learning • Learning from pre-service teachers • Dealing with systemic barriers in imaginative and creative ways
Future plans… • Changes for next year’s ICE course • Upcoming conference • Possible M.Ed. ICE course • Research
