T - TITLE • Ponder (think about) the title before reading the poem.
P - PARAPHRASE • Translate the poem into your own words.
C - CONNOTATION • Contemplate the poem for meaning beyond the literal meaning. • Look for figurative language.
A - ATTITUDE • (tone) – Observe both the speaker’s and the poet’s attitude.
S – SHIFT(S) • Change in speaker’s and poet’s attitude.
T - TITLE • Examine the title again, this time on an interpretive level.
T - THEME • Determine what the poet is saying.
“Janet Waking” Listen and follow as I read this poem. Then, we will go back and TP-CASTT IT!
T - TITLE • There is a girl waking up in the morning.
P - PARAPHRASE • A little girl, Janet, awakens in the morning and goes to see her pet hen. She finds that her hen has died from a bee sting.
C - CONNOTATION • Pun – “deeply morning” (mourning) • Metaphor – “running across the world” (yard) • Imagery – “exceedingly and purply did the knot swell” • Allusion – “rise and walk upon it” (Jesus) • Personification – “the forgetful kingdom of death” (kingdoms don’t forget)
A - ATTITUDE • Father’s love – “who would have kissed each curl of his shining baby” • Humor – “No kiss at all for her brother.”
S – SHIFT(S) • End of the third stanza. • Shifts from happy innocence to the realization of death.
T- TITLE • The title now has a double meaning. Not only does Janet awake from literal sleep, she awakens from the sleep of innocence to the awareness of the realization of death.
T - THEME • Children are transformed by the knowledge of death. • The death of innocence is inevitable.
So, there you have it! Now, you pick a partner and a poem (alliteration)and start TP-CASTTing! Each couple will be assigned a presentation day. Do it that day or receive a zero. If your partner is absent, the show must go on. They will have to do it again alone upon return.
