About the Smurfs • A Belgium comic, and television show franchise on a group of small, blue fictional creatures called Smurfs. • Created and first introduced as a series of comic characters by the Belgium comics artist Peyo (Pierre Culliford) in 1958
Fun Facts • There are more than 100 Smurfs • There names are based on adjectives that emphasize their characteristics(hefty smurf, clumsy smurf, greedy smurf, etc.) • “Smurfette” was the first female smurf to be introduced into the series • They have 30 books out and a recent new movie that came out in 2011
Babar the Elephant (Histoire of Babar le petite eléphant) • A fictional character who first appeared in the French children’s book Histoire de Babar by Jean de Brunhoff in 1931, it was an immediate success • The English version, The story of Babar, introduced by A.A. Milne appeared in 1933 in Britain and the U.S
About Babar • Babar is a Canadian/ French/ Japanese animated television series produced in Quebec, Canada by Nelvana • It premiered in 1989 on CBS and HBO • The series' 78 episodes have been broadcast in 30 languages in over 150 countries. • In 2010, a computer-animated sequel series spin-off of Babar titled Babar and the Adventures of Badou was launched. • He is very ambitious and has a lot of will power
About the book • The book is based on a tale that Brunhoff’s wife, Cecile, had invented for their children • Tells of a young elephant whose mother was killed by a hunter, he is then chased by the hunter • Babar escapes and leaves the jungle, visits a big city, and then returns to bring the benefits of civilization to his fellow elephants
About the book • As he returns the king dies from eating a bad mushroom • Because of his travels and civilization to his fellow elephants, he is appointed king of the elephant kingdoms • He marries his cousin and they have kids and teach them valuable lessons • Jean de Brunhoffs published 6 more stories before he died in 1937
