  3. We support youth… • Caring, capable, contributing adults serving as role models. • Strong education youth development programming conducted in a variety of settings. We have a rich heritage and want to ensure beneficial experiences for both youth and adults.

  4. Put Safety First • A volunteers’ position • Is challenging • Is time consuming • Requires thought and effort • You will likely gain immense satisfaction by watching and helping young people grow and develop • Always put safety first to reduce risks.

  5. Volunteer Responsibilities • Read and sign the Youth Protection Policy for Volunteers (LG636) • Participate in volunteer training • Conduct 4-H activities in compliance with Missouri 4-H guidelines • Keep youth staff informed of activities • Keep up-to-date enrollments • Welcome all! Do not discriminate!

  6. Safety Guidelines • Review club meeting agendas and project activities to identify potential risks • Develop a plan for emergencies • Keep a first aid kit available at your meeting site • Begin project meetings with a safety discussion • Be sure equipment and machines used are in good repair.

  7. Protective Safety Equipment Required • Protective flotation devices when in or near water. • Safety helmets used at horse events: • All 4-H members are required to wear a properly fitted ASTM-SEI certified equestrian helmet in speed and game events (recommended for all other horse events) at 4-H sponsored shows and rodeo events.

  8. Protective Safety Equipment Required(cont.) • Shooting sports and sport fishing will follow state 4-H certification and safety standards. • Safety goggles worn when using power tools.

  9. Safety Guidelines • All equipment appropriate for youth • Clover Kids must follow the small animal policy

  10. Permission & Health Forms • Use permission forms for special activities. • Include health information and parent’s signed authorization for emergency care. • Copies of the health form are available from the county extension office or on line at: http://www.mo4h.missouri.edu/

  11. Accident & Health Insurance • Specially purchased insurance. • Recommended for activities including: • Travel • Recreational activities • High risk events • Can be purchased for 4-H’ers and volunteers.

  12. Transporting Youth • Automobile insurance is required. • Encourage parents to arrange rides for children when possible. • Require seatbelt use. • Never use 15 passenger vans for transporting 4-Hers.

  13. Adult Supervision • The more adults, the lower the risk. • There are no magic supervision ratios. • Factors to consider: • Size of the group • Ages of children involved • Nature of the activity • Setting where activity occurs

Yes, It’s Rewarding • Being a part of Missouri 4-H gives you and the young people you serve the chance to: • Acquire new knowledge and share ideas • Develop self-confidence and leadership • Participate in decision making • Develop responsibility and commitment • Make new friends • Enjoy recreational activities
