  2. Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills The student is expected to: Proportionality—6.4.G Generate equivalent forms of fractions, decimals, and percents using real-world problems, including problems that involve money. Proportionality—6.5.C Use equivalent fractions, decimals, and percents to show equal parts of the same whole. 6.1.D Communicate mathematical ideas, reasoning, and their implications using multiple representations, including symbols, diagrams, graphs, and language as appropriate. Mathematical Processes

  3. ADDITIONAL EXAMPLE 1 Bennett saves 12% of his income. Write this percent as a fraction and as a decimal. , 0.12

  4. ADDITIONAL EXAMPLE 2 A An afterschool music program has 15 out of 50 students participating. Write as a decimal and as a percent. 0.3; 30% B Only of the T-shirts are medium size. Write as a decimal and as a percent. 0.075; 7.5%

  5. 9.2 LESSON QUIZ Write each percent as a fraction and as a decimal. 6.4.G , 0.2 1. 20% of the books , 0.65 2. 65% of the students 3 , 3.5 3. 350% increase in sales

  6. 5. Write each fraction as a decimal and as a percent. 4. 0.72, 72% of the tickets 2.25, 225% 6. Chloe answered 42 of the 50 questions correctly. Express this amount as a percent and a decimal. 84%, 0.84 of the tickets

  7. Have students research local data that are presented as percents. Also have them find data that is presented as decimals and/or fractions. Students should discuss the merits of using each number format. A common use of percents is in residential home sales, to show price changes. Have students complete the table by working backward to find the original price.

  8. HINT: They can use what they know about writing percents as fractions.

  9. How can you write equivalent percents, fractions, and decimals? Sample answer: Any decimal or percent can be written as a fraction with a denominator of 100. Any fraction can be written as a decimal by dividing the numerator by the denominator. Any decimal can be written as a percent by multiplying by 100 and inserting a percent symbol.
