Additional information requested at CLP meeting includes maximum noise levels for vehicle movements and effects of frequency of noise on audibility. Noise indices LA90, LAeq, LAmax, and LA01 are commonly used in the UK. Audibility of sound depends on level, character, frequency, and continuity.

Additional Information Requested Information requested at CLP meeting: • Maximum Noise Levels for Vehicle Movements • Vehicle Movements on Existing A421 Information requested after CLP meeting: • Use of LAmax and LAeq noise indices • Effects of Frequency of Noise on Audibility
Noise Indices • Noise can be measured using many different indices • In UK the following are commonly used: • LA90 – background noise • LAeq – activity noise (except for road traffic) • LA10 – road traffic • LAmax – activity noise • LA01 – activity noise • Most other countries use LAeq for all noise and UK is following this approach

Audibility and Frequency • Audibility of sound depends on many factors: • Level relative to ambient sound level • Character compared with character of ambient sound • Frequency of each noise (presence of tones) • Fluctuating or steady • Continuous or intermittent
