  2. HISTORY • The European Union is a geo-political entity covering a large portion of the European continent. It is founded upon numerous treaties and has undergone expansions that have taken it from 6 member states to 27, a majority of states in Europe.

As distinct from ideas of federation, confederation or customs union the main development in Europe depends on a supranational foundation to make war unthinkable and materially impossible and reinforce democracy enunciated by Robert Schuman and other leaders in the Europe Declaration.Theoriginal idea had JeanMonnet The principle was at the heart of the European Coal and Steel Community in the Treaty of Paris (1951), following the "Schuman Declaration" and the later the Treaties of Rome establishing the European Economic Community and the European Atomic Energy Community.

TheCurrent European Union • Currently theEuropean Union has27 members and there are 23 official languages used in EU. • EU official anthem is the Ode to Joy originally composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. • It consists of a circle of 12 yellow stars on a blue background. The blue represents the west, the number of stars represents completeness while their position in a circle represents unity.

  6. The European Parliament • The EP has an 3 main seats and they are at Luxembourg, Brussels, Strasbourg. However, they want to cancel one seat. • The president of European Parliament is from 2009 JerzyBuzek.

  7. Slovakia in EU • Slovakia is the member of an EU from 1 May 2004. • We have 13 MEPsin the European Parliament.
