Eastern Oklahoma • Ozark Plateau: This region is in NE OK. It is famous for its wild, rugged beauty. Pure cold springs feed the Illinois Spavinaw, and other rivers. • Eastern Lowlands: This region is west and south of the Ozarks. It has two parts, the Prairie Plains and the lower Arkansas Valley. Rivers are important to this region. Cattle ranching is an important industry.
Eastern Oklahoma • Ouachita Mountains: They are a scenic paradise in SE OK. Beavers Bend State Park is one of the most beautiful places in OK. Lumbering is an important industry. • Coastal Plains: A 40-mile wide strip of land along the Red River. Stretches from the Arbuckles to the Ouachitas. Several manufacturing plants are located here.
Sandstone Hills: This is a fairly rough area in east central OK. The hills were formed by erosion. The Cross Timbers, a scrub trees belt that separates eastern and western OK is located in this region. Petroleum attracted many people to this region. Osage Prairies: Located in the western Osage County. Great herds of buffalo once grazed there. The most important activity other than cattle ranching was the Burbank Oil Field. Eastern Oklahoma
Western Oklahoma • Western Red Plains: This is a plain of red soil that is between the north and south boundaries of western OK. Agriculture is a major industry. Has the biggest population. • High Plains: Made up of the panhandle and far NW OK. It is the highest, driest, and flattest region. The cattle industry is important in the High Plains.
Western Oklahoma • The Arbuckles: Located in South Central OK. Famous for swift, clear streams and waterfalls. Contains many types of building stones. • The Wichitas: Located in SW OK near Lawton. Mt. Scott is the highest peak, 2,464 feet.
