3. Textbook and study notes
Hashemi, RH & Bradley, Jr, WG & Lisanti, CJ 2004, MRI The basics, 2nd edn, Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins, Philadelphia.
CSU MRI Study Notes.
Lecturers notes.
4. Assessment
1. Mid-session Test, 33%
2. Final Exam, 67%
5. MRI Scanner
6. Process of MR Imaging Put subject in big magnetic field (leave him there)
Transmit radio waves into subject (about 3 ms)
Turn off radio wave transmitter
Receive radio waves re-transmitted by subject
Manipulate re-transmission with magnetic fields during this readout interval (10-100 ms: MRI is not a snapshot)
Store measured radio wave data vs. time
Now go back to transmit radio waves into subject and get more data.
Process raw data to reconstruct images
Allow subject to leave scanner (this is optional)
7. Topics Physical principles of MRI
MRI instrumentation
MRI pulse sequences - spin echo and an introduction to other sequences
Spatial localization
MR contrast weightings
Factors affecting image quality
MR safety
Clinical MRI

15. T1 and T2 T1-Relaxation: Recovery
Recovery of longitudinal orientation.
T1 time refers to interval where 63% of longitudinal magnetization is recovered.
T2-Relaxation: Dephasing
Loss of transverse magnetization.
T2 time refers to interval where only 37% of original transverse magnetization is present.
