Criteria for Selection • Scholarship– cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher • Service – willingness to renderservice to school or community • Leadership – influences peers in upholding school ideals; responsible, contributes ideas, demonstrates personal conviction • Character – exemplifies desirable qualities of behavior; upholds principles of morality and ethics; demonstrates standards of honesty and reliability

  5. Membership Requirements • Attend bi-weekly membership meetings(Wednesdays 2:30 – 3:30) • Participate on at least one committee • Service hours(20 per year) • Membership dues($30 one time)

  6. Service Requirement • Definition: for betterment of school or community • Annual requirement = 20 hours • Minimum 10 hours per semester • Minimum 10 sponsored hours (5 per semester) • Mandatory participationin few major projects(ex: Red Out, Penny Wars, BFFIN – Bottles for Families in Need)

  7. Application Process • Application packets due September 12th • Input from teachers • Faculty Council reviews applicant packets, makes decision regarding acceptance • Letters mailed informing applicants

TIP: Start your Application Packet this summer • Contact at least two adults (not relatives) and ask them to write a letter of recommendation. • Explain why you need the letter • Provide them with a “cheat sheet” • Give them 2-3 weeks notice, and a due date at least 1 week prior to when your packet is due • Follow up 1-2 days after the due date • Thank them for their time • Don’t wait until Sept. when school starts!

MORE TIPS:Avoid Common Errors • Missing signatures – students, parents • Missing letters of recommendation • Misclassifying paid jobs as community service • Applicant packet not prepared by student • Lacking examples of leadership – leadership doesn’t have to come with a titleExamples: • Camp Counselor or Group Leader • Leading/organizing a project • Training or teaching others • Turning the Application Packet in late

Join NHS if… … you’re passionate about serving your community. … you enjoy helping others. … you have a strong work ethic and want to develop your leadership skills.
