  1. Newsworthy! Write a great news story by following these steps: • CREATE the story behind the headline and photo you are given. “Students Participate in Important Election” - what did you decide?

  2. Answer the questions WHO? WHAT? WHEN? WHERE? In the first 2-3 sentences of your story. • REMEMBER!!! The MOST important facts come FIRST! Our student’s example: “Students at Bluevale lined up yesterday to vote for their next year’s co-presidents”

  3. EXPAND in two more BRIEF paragraphs. These paragraphs will explain the “HOW” and “WHY” of your news story. The booth was run all day by two of the school’s student leaders, Jake and Cindy. Students were voting between the 4 remaining candidates: Mohammed, Samantha, Joshua and Connor.

  4. ADD a “BYSTANDER” or “EXPERT” quotation to add interest and information to your article. “This is going to be a close race,” said Mr. Moffatt, the teacher in charge of the student council, “ all of these people are amazing students and leaders”.

  5. AIM to fill ALL of the lines. Be sure to INDENT or LEAVE A LINE between paragraphs! Each of the campaign teams have been working hard in order to see their leader win. “I know how hard everybody has worked to get this far in the election,” says candidate Connor Sweet. “It is a shame that only two of us can win. All of these people deserve to win!” Votes will be counted and announced by the end of the week.

  6. Checkpoint! When you look at your own news story, use this checklist! • Does my story connect the headline and photo provided? • Do I answer WHO? WHAT? WHEN? WHERE? In the first 2-3 sentences? • DO I explain the HOW and WHY of the story in paragraphs 2 and 3? • Have I included a BYSTANDER or EXPERT quotation? • Did I fill in the lines? Did I make clear paragraphs? WAY TO GO!!!

  7. WRITE ON! Writing a great Multi-Paragraph response just takes some practice! Follow these steps to success: • Before you write, form an opinion! “Is it a good idea for high school students to have a part-time job?” What do you think? Answer YES or NO!!!! Take a side!

  8. Your Introduction: Now that you have CHOSEN A SIDE, you must defend your decision with THREE, DIFFERENT reasons. Our student example looks like this: The question of whether or not it is a good idea for high school students to have a part time job comes up a lot, and so it should. HIgh school students with part time jobs are taught to have time management and how to be successful in the real world. Secondly, it gives them a responsibility beyond just going to school and doing chores. Lastly, it will set students up to be financially successful outside of high school. All of these reasons show why it is a good idea for students to have a part-time job. Let’s work together to identify what each colour means!

  9. Your Body Paragraphs: • You will need to have THREE, DIFFERENT body paragraphs. • Each body paragraph explains a different argument. Be sure to indent or leave a line between paragraphs! For example, our student’s first paragraph was about “time management” being a good reason to have a job”.

  10. Each body paragraph should have: • A point that comes from the introduction (ex. Time management) • Some examples. Our student said “when people grow up they will need to: wake up, get breakfast, shower and clean up, get their car started, get dressed and get ready for work within an hour or two”

  11. An explanation: “Being able to balance a job and school shows good time management”. • A summary that leads to the next body paragraph: “In high school, they will be prepared and ready for the real world if they learn early from a part-time job and school”

  12. In conclusion... Your last paragraph wraps things up for the reader. It will: • Re-state your original argument. “It is a good idea for high school students to have a part-time job”. • Remind the reader of your THREE supporting reasons. “Time management, responsibility and financial success” • Make a final statement that re-emphasizes your point. “Clearly, it is a good idea for high school students to have a part-time job”.

  13. Checkpoint! When you look at your own opinion essay, use this checklist! • Do I choose ONE side of the question? Do I use THREE, different reasons for support? • Do I have THREE body paragraphs? Does each one relate to one of my chosen reasons? • Do my body paragraphs make a point, provide examples and explain the reason? • Do I have a solid conclusions? • Did I fill in the lines? Did I make clear paragraphs? WAY TO GO!!!

  14. Powerful Paragraphs On the Literacy Test, you are asked to answer “Open Response” Questions. Here is what you need to know! • Answer the question in the first sentence. For example, “Is Lizarda a good choice for this internship?” Yes, Lizarda is a good choice for the internship. • In your second sentence, explain “why” you have made your decision. He is a good choice for this internship because... • Add a SPECIFIC DETAIL you can use that comes right from the reading. His teacher says he has “the basic principles of animation”.
