THE CZECH REPUBLIC • The Czech Republic is a landlocked country in Central Europe. • It is bordered by Germany to the west, Austria to the south, Slovakia to the east and Poland to the north. • The Czech Republic includes the historical territories of Bohemia and Moravia, as well as a small part of Silesia.

Political system • The Czech Republic is parliamentary representative democracy. • The President of the Czech republic MilošZeman was directly elected by people for a five-year term. • The Parliament is bicameral • the Chamber of Deputies (200 members) • the Senate (81 members) • Head of the government is Prime Minister.
Geography • The longest river is Vltava (430 km). • Mountains : Giant Mountains, The Ore Mountain, Jizera Mountains, Moravian-Silesian Beskids. • The highest peak is Sněžka (1603 m). • The lowest point is Elbe River (115 m). Obr. 3.
Economy • Currency: Czech crown (CZK) • The Czech Republiv is one of the most stable and prosperous of the post-Communist states with growth of over 6% annually. • Most of the economy has been privatized after 1989, including the banks and telecommunications. • Industry: heavy and general machine-building, iron and steel production, metalworking, chemical production, electronics, transportation equipment, textiles, glass, brewing. • Main agricultural products are sugar beets, fodder roots, potatoes and wheat. • Export: machinery and transport equipment. • Import: raw materials and fuel, chemicals.

How much did you know? • Czech king Charles IV - Of particular significance was the founding of Charles University in Prague in 1348, Charles Bridge, Charles Square. Much of Prague Castle and the cathedral of Saint Vitus in Gothic style were completed during his reign. • Thomas Masaryk - was an Austrian-Czech politician, sociologist and philosopher, who fought for Czechoslovak independence during World War I, became the founder and the first President of Czechoslovakia. • Václav Havel - the first President of the Czech Republic.
