  3. S3 Background Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools (OSDFS) Initiative. Awarded nearly $39 million to 11 states in October 2010: Arizona Michigan California South Carolina Iowa Tennessee Kansas West Virginia Louisiana Wisconsin Maryland
  4. Program Description Safe and Supportive Schools awards grants to State educational agencies (SEAs) to support statewide measurement of, and targeted programmatic interventions to improve, conditions for learning in order to help schools improve safety and reduce substance use.
  5. Types of Projects Projects should take a systematic approach to improving conditions for learning in eligible schools through improved measurement systems that assess conditions for learning, which must include school safety, and the implementation of programmatic interventions that address problems identified by data.

  11. Kansas S3 Continuum Goals Implement school climate measurement system in buildings serving students in grades 9 to 12. Provide high schools with data needed to identify climate concerns and evidence-based interventions that will address those concerns. Build capacity for high schools to integrate evidence-based climate interventions into all improvement efforts. Use data to demonstrate improved climate in high schools.

Kansas S3 continuum Interventions Generated from variety of evidence-based sources, including SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-based Practices and Programs Includes 10 categories: Academic Achievement and School Attendance Substance Abuse Prevention and Intervention Bullying, Violence Prevention and Conflict Resolution Relationships and Self Esteem Suicide Prevention Teen Pregnancy and Drop Out Prevention Truancy and Drop Out Prevention Career Training Mental Health and Emotional Support Family Intervention

Kansas S3 continuum Interventions (Continued) Categories Universal:Targets general population using prevention strategies within a community or school Selective: Target at individuals selected by exposure to risk factors for substance abuse, violence and other areas Indicated: intensive programs designed for students who already displays signs of substance abuse, violence or other problem behavior

  17. Kansas S3 Continuum Timeline October 2011: Awarded $9.8 million (or about 25 percent) of S3 dollars February 2011: Hired S3 Coordinator June: Invited all high schools to register for information Prerequisite: Kansas Communities That Care (KCTC) Survey Nearly 100 schools responded
