  3. NH-SWAP Review S. Joy • Section 1: nh-x-swap-2-plutocruise-v2.0nh-x-swap-2-plutocruise-v2.0nh-x-swap-3-plutocruise-v2.0 • Volume Level Files • General Comments • AAREADME • VOLDESC

  4. ►No ASCII Versions of the documents in the /DOCUMENT directory PDS (PDS3 Standards) requires that ASCII versions of all critical documents are included in the archive. The accepted work-around to this requirement is that projects provide “human readable” HTML versions of the documents with PNG/JPEG versions of the figures. I have no objection to providing the NH project with a waiver to this requirement. However, if this is the case, then this waiver should be noted in the ERRATA.TXT file in the root directory of the volume. Problem remains, suggestion for ERRATA note is still a viable solution NH-SWAP Review S. Joy nh-x-swap-2-plutocruise-v2.0nh-x-swap-3-plutocruise-v2.0General Comments

  5. ►Introduction Section Says that the volume contains data from 2007-06-23T00:00:00 to 2010-07-18T00:00:00. I find data from 2008-05-28 to 2010-07-17. nh.cat gives the mission phase boundaries as: PLUTOCRUISE 2007-06-27 to 2014-12-31 The text should state the time range of the archive and explain why that differs from the time range of the mission phase. You could consider pointing users at seq_swap_plutocruise.tab in the DOCUMENT directory for a list of the time intervals that instrument was operating and the activities being performed. Corrected ►Required reading section /CATALOG/ directory: There are no files corresponding to NH_TRAJECTORY.* In the /DOCUMENT directory there are files called “nh_mission_trajectory. Corrected /DOCUMENT/directory: There are no files corresponding to PAYLOAD.* In the /DOCUMENT directory there are files called “payload_ssr.” Corrected /CALIB/directory: Does not list the actual calibration tables, only the CALINFO.TXT file No change, accepted as is Please add SWAP_CAL.* to the list in the DOCUMENT directory Corrected NH-SWAP Review S. Joy nh-x-swap-2-plutocruise-v2.0nh-x-swap-3-plutocruise-v2.0aareadme.txt (1)

  6. ►Other Important Documents Section Please add seq_swap_plutocruise.* to the list and describe the contents to the user Corrected ► Directory Tree Section Description of NH_TRAJECTORY.* says "NH Spacecraft & Jupiter trajectories" while the PDS label says "NH Spacecraft & Dust trajectories" Change QUAT_ZXYZ_J2K_TO_INSTR* to QUAT_AXYZ_J2K_TO_INSTR* to match volume. Does not list or describe SWAP_CAL.* in this section under DOCUMENT Directory tree section of the aareadme.txt file reworked, these problems not longer exist NH-SWAP Review S. Joy nh-x-swap-2-plutocruise-v2.0nh-x-swap-3-plutocruise-v2.0aareadme.txt (2)

  7. ► Contains a reference to a SOLAR_WIND target catalog that is not present, followed by a coding note of some form. ^TARGET_CATALOG = { "SOLAR_WIND.CAT" } skep_COMMENT INSERT_TARGTOBJS_VOLDESC contains a list of target catalog Corrected In the CATINFO.TXT file there is a note indicating that a SOLAR_WIND.CAT file exists but is not included in this archive. Corrected NH-SWAP Review S. Joy nh-x-swap-2-plutocruise-v2.0nh-x-swap-3-plutocruise-v2.0voldesc.cat

  8. NH-SWAP Review S. Joy • Document Directory Files • DOCINFO • SOC_INST_ICD • SWAP_CAL • (all other files are acceptable “as is”)

  9. ►General Comments 1) The “.ASC" extension usually used for non-tabular ASCII data rather than documents. I suggest renaming quat_axyz_instr_to_j2k.asc to quat_axyz_instr_to_j2k.txt and correcting the pointer in the PDS label. Lien rejected 2) There are no “ASCII” versions of these documents. Previously noted NH-SWAP Review S. Joy nh-x-swap-2-plutocruise-v2.0nh-x-swap-3-plutocruise-2.0/document

  10. ►line 148 “+->NH_SWAP_V###_TI.TXT SWAP SPICE I-Kernel as documentation” You might consider improving the description of nh_swap_v100_ti.txt by adding a statement that says that this file is subject to update and that the most up-to-date copy will be found at the NAIF website. Problem corrected by adding discussion to NH_SWAP_V###_TI.TXT ►line 150 “+->QUAT_AXYZ_INSTR_TO_J2K.ASC Quaternion description target for PDS” Update file name (.TXT) if General Comment is accepted (Comment rejected). 11. ►Section 14.5.7 SPICE Orbit and Attitude Calculations focuses entirely on the Jupiter flyby. Can this section be expanded or generalized to discuss solar wind and Pluto flyby calculations as well. Section appears to be unchangedData are provided in a proper heliocentric coordinate system Product label describes coordinate systems New document (nh_trajectory_file.pdf) added ► page 143, Para 1, line 6 "in Error: Reference source not found" inserted mid sentence. Corrected ► Consider adding text to section 14.10.1 to describe Figure 14-26 which is currently the only content in this section. Corrected ► Consider changing the caption of Figure 14-26 from "SWAP Level 2 Pipeline Diagram“to "SWAP Level 3 Pipeline Diagram" Corrected NH-SWAP Review S. Joy nh-x-swap-2-plutocruise-v2.0nh-x-swap-3-plutocruise-v2.0/document/soc_inst_icd

  12. ►Page 3, last Para add a reference to Figure 2 in the last sentence, "Below we show the response curve...” Corrected – figure reference added ► Page 7, 4) Energy Bin Calculations "Since we do not know what angle the ions enter, we assume the ions enter the center of the instrument..." What are the practical consequences of this assumption and how does it impact (or fold into) your error computations? No further discussion is provided. Corrected – explanatory text added Para refers to esa_rpa_v19_energy_binsf.csv rather than esa_rpa_v19_energy_binsf.tab Corrected – text revised Table above provides energy width. Is this full-width, half maximum or some other width. Neither the text nor file label provide a description of the width parameter. Corrected – explanatory text added ► Page 11, Background Subtraction "are scaled by the distance to the Sun squared and those scaled rates (counts*R2/sample) are stored in…" Please provide the units for the distance to the Sun (AU vs. km will make a difference in the calculation). Corrected – units added NH-SWAP Review S. Joy nh-x-swap-2-plutocruise-v2.0nh-x-swap-3-plutocruise-v2.0/document/swap_cal

  15. ► I have spot checked only a small subset of the data files A few old files were checked to verify that files previously checked remain valid. Most of the data files checked have been from 2013 and 2014 All of the files I have checked have been readable in FV All of the files have information in the FITS headers for each component The PDS labels for the files are mostly correct There are some minor issues (case, pluralization ) with the values assigned to the “UNITS” keywords NH-SWAP Review S. 22. NH-SWAP Review S. Joy Recommendations The SWAP raw (nh-x-swap-2-plutocruise-v2.0) and calibrated (nh-x-swap-3-plutocruise-v2.0) datasets are both scientifically useful as is and they should be certified as such by the PDS as part of this review. There are minor documentation errors and PDS standards errors that should be either corrected or noted in an ERRATA.TXT file at the root level of the archive “volume”.
