Encourage students to participate in after school sport programs. 6. 100% students must dress in PE uniforms (middle/high schools) 7. 100% participation in Jump Rope For Heart. 8. TEACH THE SPORTS SKILLS!
Senate Bill 19 – mandated 135 minutes of physical activity for students in Kindergarten through 5th grade. The bill also mandated a coordinated school health program by the year 2007-08 (CATCH)
Senate Bill 530 – mandates: • 135 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity in grades K thru 5th grade • Middle school students are required to have 4 to 6 semester of PE and at least 225 minutes of physical activity every 2 weeks • Coordinated school health program in the middle school • FitnessGram assessment for students in grades 3rd thru 12th grade is required one time a year.
Senate Bill 891 mandates: 1. A school district shall require a student enrolled in full-day PK, in Kinder, or in a grade level below grade six to participate in moderate to vigorous daily physical activity for at least 30 minutes throughout the school year. 2. If a district establishes a student to teacher ratio greater than 45 to 1 in PE classes, the district shall specifically identify the manner in which the safety of the students will be maintained.
Senate Bill 892 mandates: • Coordinated School Health: Each campus must develop • goals and objectives based on fitness assessment data, • academic performance, attendance rates, academic • disadvantages, the use of success of any method to • ensure students are reaching required (MVPA) and other • indicator recommended by School Health Advisory • Committee (SHAC). It must be included in all Campus • Improvement Plans for elementary, middle, and high • schools campuses.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM Senate Bill 19 mandated a coordinated school health Program in every school district. The PSJA district adopted the (CATCH) Coordinated Approach to Children’s Health curriculum. The CATCH program consist of four components. 1.K-8 Health curriculum 2.Eat Smart (nutrition) GO-SLOW-WHOA 3.Physical Education curriculum (MVPA) 4.Home Team (handouts for family) It also includes the CATCH kit, which provides games and activities for kinder thru 8th grade. The district is using this curriculum at the elementary and Middle school levels. The district is recommending elementary/middle school teachers to use a minimum of two games/activities per six weeks.
SB 8 2011-12 Mandates Limits the FitnessGram to those students in a Physical Education course. HB 692 Mandates 2011 Allows students who are not able to participate in physical activity to Substitute physical education courses with courses in English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and or Academics Electives.
SENATE BILL 530 FITNESSGRAM ASSESSMENT The FitnessGram Assessment is for students in grades 3 through 12 PE classes or credit for PE courses. The state mandates on administration for the FG in the elementary, middle, and high school levels. The Physical Education Teachers are required to input the FG software and keep a hard copy of data. FG scores and names of exempt students are confidential and only should be seen by school personnel of interest. The FG scores will need to be inputted by the deadline given by the District Administration.
FITNESSGRAM TESTING Students will be tested on the FitnessGram. Listed below are the tests that will be administered district wide: 1. push ups 2. curl ups 3. pacer/1 mile run/walk 4. shoulder stretch 5. trunk lift 6. sit and reach 7. height and weight
EXERCISES Daily exercises used during class with students will be both age and developmentally appropriate. Components of the FitnessGram will be incorporated in the students daily exercises and physical conditioning program. A copy of your daily exercises should be included in your lesson plans. STAFF DEVELOPMENT PE Teachers and assistance will be required to attend staff development as provided by the district. PE teachers must register thru the ERO provided by the district, 24 hrs. before the session. Check the ERO by dates that are designated by the district as Staff days. If you do not register thru the ERO, a memo will be sent to your principal.
AED/CPR CERTIFICATION Senate Bill and local school board policy mandates that all PE teachers be certified in child and adult CPR and AED. The district will provide inservice day in order to maintain your certification. If you do not attend a CPR and AED inservices for recertification, it will be your responsibility to get certified. .
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENT Middle schools have a requirement of 225 minutes per 2 weeks and elementary 135 minutes a week their PE classes. ACADEMICS IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION PE teachers will reinforce academic concepts in their lessons, exercise, activities and games. The focus will be on science words and math concepts for all grade levels.
TRACK MEET AND CROSS COUNTRY/RACE WALKING MEET The track meet and CC is mandated for all elementary and middle schools (6th). Race walking is also mandated for all elementary schools. Grade levels eligible for these events are 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th students. The meets will be held at different designated sites. WELLNES FAIR The District Wellness Fair is held yearly. The fair will showcase physical activity, skills, and dances from the PE department and local departments and business with Wellness themes. Each elementary schools will showcase a game or activity once every 3 years. Each game or activity will have a maximum time of 7 minutes and will require music. PE teachers are required to attend the Fair the year school is presenting.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION SCOPE AND SEQUENCE A scope and sequence will be develop for all levels. Physical education and wellness activities will be outlined. The purpose of the scope and sequence is to have district consistency in PE. Manipulative, Seasonal games and innovative games will allow PE teachers flexibility on the implementation of games and activities. EXERCISE AS PUNISHEMENT Exercises will not be used for punishment in PE classes. Exercises used for punishment has been classified as corporal punishment. We should reinforce the benefits of physical activity and exercise with our students at all times.
AFTER SCHOOL SPORTS PROGRAMS The programs will continue through out the school year. Each elementary and middle schools will follow the guidelines set forth by the Parks and Recreation, PAL leagues. PE teachers will promote participation, register students, recruit volunteer coaches, coordinate practices and secure facilities for game and practices.

STUDENT TEACHER MENTOR Some PE teachers will the privilege of mentoring college students teachers. PE teachers will follow university requirements on a sequential list of responsibilities placed on student teachers. PLEASE ADHERE TO THESE REQUIREMENTS. PE teachers will also have required meetings with university supervisors and will do all required paperwork.
PLAYGROUND/AREA SAFETY • PE teachers need to check the playground field for potholes, unleveled areas, glass, etc., daily. Report unsafe findings to principal or safety chairperson • Throughout the school year, safety orientations should be conducted with students. Discussions should include potentially dangerous situations, class conduct, and rules for proper use of equipment and apparatus. • Safety rules for specific units of instruction should be discussed at the onset of each unit. • Rules should be posted and brought to the attention of students regularly.
EQUIPMENT SAFETY • If equipment is defective, it should be reported to principal and removed from use. • A regular inspection of equipment and facilities by the PE teachers should be done weekly. • Proper use of equipment and apparatus is important. Students must receive instructions in the proper use of equipment and apparatus before they are issued to the students and used. • TEACHER SUPERVISION • Supervision of students requires that the teacher and teacher assistant be actively involved and moving throughout the area at all times. All incidents should be reported immediately to the school nurse and administration.
INCLEMENT WEATHER • It is imperative that ample shade and liquid be provided during 90+ temperature. • 50 degrees temp. and the corresponding wind chill factors indicate the need caution during cold weather months (i.e. indoor activities) • Students should not be out in misty, drizzling, and or rainy weather. • Only instructional/educational videos related to health or physical education may be shown occasionally during extreme inclement weather.
