SEMINAR 1. Title :BIOENERGY from Red Algae: Vision and Challenges 2. Speaker : Key-Hyup Kim ( Distinguished Fellow at AICT, Seoul National Univ.) 3. Time : 16:00 – 17:00, Thursday, December 4, 2008 4. Place : e+ Lecture Hall (room 83188), 2nd Research Building, Sungkyunkwan University 5. Summary : Current energy and environmental problems of the world are two most critical ones for human beings and the earth. Unless concerted, relentless efforts are made globally, we may face tremendous difficulties in maintaining current quality of life, and even for survival on earth. Fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gas have generated too much carbon dioxide to cause global warming by green house gas effect, and there are only limited fossil fuels left. That’s why alternatives, particularly renewable energies are needed for our future. Solar cells, solar heat, and bio energy are 3 major renewable energies by the Sun. All biomass are made by photosynthesis of plants using carbon dioxide, water, and sun light. Recent up-surge to produce bio ethanol from corn and sugar-cane have two serious problems, agricultural inflation and deforestation. There is absolute need for alternative biomass for bio energy for our future. Algae are known for their super carbon sequestration capacity. This seminar will present current status of red algae to bio fuel R&D, and its potentials and challenges for successful commercialization for our energy future as real blue ocean strategy. 6.
