Tutoring path In connection with the M&IB and Academic Skills –courses Objective: provide you with the skills and knowledge that you need to successfully progress through your studies Consists of: • Last Thursday’s introductory session • Today’s introduction session to M&IB and Academic Skills –course Mon Sept 9 • Specialization area tutoring meetings Wed Oct 9 • Library intro: How to use the library in your studies? Thu Oct 17 • Thesis intro: What to expect? Thu Oct 31 Includes short intro to CEMS & Double Degrees

Academic skills course Academic writing (Carol Kiriakos) • Introduction to developing and using your writing as part of your academic studies and professional development Academic work I (SaijaKatila) • Academic work and research, types of research questions and the nature of academic research, reading analytically and constructing a critical literature review, identifying disciplinary cultures Academic work II (Rebecca Piekkari) • Philosophical debates in management research, assessing and evaluating the quality of management research + Practical orientation • Using the library • Thesis intro: What to expect?

Some practicalities Grading: pass/fail, as we focus on building skills • You have to attend all sessions and pass all three academic parts (those provided by Carol Kiriakos, SaijaKatila& Rebecca Piekkari) to pass the course All readings and requirements for each part are provided by the lecturers • Check course homepage in Noppa • If further questions: contact each lecturer

Pre-assignment GRADING: pass/fail, given that these are personal essays Write a 1-2 pagereflectionessayaround the followingquestions: Whatare my objectives for the Management & IB Master’sstudies? Whatwill I do to achieve my objectives? Whatexpectationsdo I have for the program? What and how am I expecting to learn? Objective: Part of the tutoring path – forces you to think about YOUR objectives for YOUR Master studies – you both • Study more strategically and • Are aware what you will have learned when finish

  21. Pre-assignment If you haven’t returned your pre-assignment yet (or want to revise the current version): Final deadline Fri Sept 13 @ 10.00 am Return to M&IB postbox (by the Arkadia reception)

  22. Four specialization area topic lectures • For each module: • A pre-reading package – READ THESE BEFORE THE SESSION • Four-hour compulsory lecture session • A reflection essay – PART OF YOUR GRADING • Final grading: arithmetic mean of the four reflection essays (0-5)

  23. Tutoring path Joint Thesis intro with AC-course: What to expect? Specialization area tutoring meetings • Small-group interactive tutoring meetings • Go to the group that corresponds the specialization area that you’ll take (i.e., you only need to do one of these small-group meetings)
