  2. Dr. Gregg Marutzky GOSPEL GRACE Part TWO

  3. GOSPEL GRACE

  4. Part 2 – Ministry of Grace • Personal Grace • Grace Informed Life • Grace Informed Ministry • Paradigmatic Passages of Grace • Ministry Grace • Practical Grace • Questions & Answers

  5. GOSPEL GRACE 2 Corinthians 12:8-9 “8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9 But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

  6. Give Yourself Grace • Personalize Scripture • Personalize Prayer • Personalize the Cross

  7. Personalize Scripture John 3:16-17 “16 For God so loved [Gregg] that he gave his one and only Son, that [since Gregg] believes in him [Gregg] shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn [Gregg], but to save [Gregg] through him.”

  8. Personalize Prayer John 5:14-15 “14 This is the confidence [Gregg] has in approaching God: that if he asks anything according to his will, he hears [Gregg]. 15 And if [Gregg] knows that he hears him—whatever [Gregg] asks—[Gregg] knows that he has what he asked of him.” “Ask the Lord how he feels about you, Ask Christ to give you a sign, Ask Jesus if he loves you”

  9. Personalize the Cross 1 Corinthians 1:18 “18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”

  10. Mistaken Beliefs • I am a bad person. • I have to be perfect for God to love me. • People would not love me if they knew me. • I cannot make any mistakes. • I cannot trust other people. • I am unworthy of other people’s love. • I have to be perfect. • I have to share my faith daily to be saved. • I need approval to be right with God.

  11. Scriptural Beliefs • Claim Your Grace • Affirm your strengths • Accept mistakes as learning opportunities • Progress is the goal not perfection • Perfection is impossible • Forgive yourself as God forgave you through Christ • Accept your weaknesses

  12. Scriptural Beliefs • Become self-aware and grow • Relapse in sin is common • God has forgiven worst • Self-prophecy is fulfilling • Shame is a lie of Satan • Guilt is a gauge to change • God commands us to love our self • Accept the gift of grace

  13. Grace Informed Life 1 John 4:10-12 “10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.”

  14. Loved and in Love • Loved by God • Loved by Others • In Love with God • In Love with Others

  15. Forgiven and Forgiving Hebrews 4:15-16 “15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

  16. Spiritual Self-Talk “I am a new creation” “God does not remember my sin” “God does not condemn me” “I am no longer guilty of the past” “God loves me”

  17. Forgiven of Sin Romans 6:23 “23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” • Unintentional • Intentional

  18. Forgiven of Guilt Hebrews 10:22 “22 Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.” • Conscience • Memory

  19. Forgiven of Shame Romans 8:1-2“1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.” • Consequences • Reputation

  20. Forgiven of Scars Romans 8:38-39 “38 I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” • Regrets • Wounds • Pain

  21. Forgiving the Forgivable Luke 6:37-38 “37 "Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." • Forgiving the Apologetic • Forgiving the Repentant

  22. Forgiving the Unforgivable Ephesians 4:30-32 “30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with all malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” • Forgiving the Unapologetic • Forgiving the Unconfessed • Forgiving the Unrepentant

  23. Ministry Motivated by Grace 2 Corinthians 3: 6 “6 He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.” Christian ministry is practiced after the resurrection of Jesus and therefore the focus is on new creation. Conversion occurs through death, burial and resurrection. Repentance occurs by death, burial, and resurrection. We remember the cross in worship and the Lord’s Supper.

  24. Ministry Motivated by Grace We carry our cross daily as we follow Christ. But we live in a state of resurrection not death or burial. We experience our moments of burial or wilderness when God is silent and we are confused. But our hope is in the new day, the resurrected life, the new potential and eternal destiny. We live the Christian life is a state of gratitude for deliverance from the death and burial as new possibilities are available.

  25. Grace and Truth John 1:17 “17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” God’s righteousness and his graciousness is always in dialectic. Dialectic means both are true at the same time, “both/and” not “either/or.” God is faithful to not judge without mercy. God’s grace and truth are always in tension so we do not get what we deserve but better than we deserve.

  26. Grace and Truth Grace is a difficult concept if we are black and white thinkers. God is not either truthful or graceful but rather simultaneously both at the same time. Because of God’s grace we are sinners and saints at the same time. The truth is that we are sinners but also due to his grace we are saved.

  27. Law and Grace Romans 7:4-6 “4 My brothers and sisters, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. 5 When we were in the realm of the flesh, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in us, so that we bore fruit for death. 6 By dying to what once bound us, are released from the law so we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.”

  28. No Condemnation Romans 8:1-4 “1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”

  29. Continually Cleansed 1 John 1:7 “7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” God knows we are going to keep sinning as Christians so he planned on our continual cleansing. Christians are constantly cleansed of sin by the blood of Jesus by walking in light or living as disciples walking in the footsteps of Christ.

  30. Continually Cleansed Grace purifies us if we are turned to the light meaning our sins are not hidden. God knows we are not perfect so he forgives constantly by us being headed in the righteous direction, looking to light. Forgiveness is as simple as looking to the light! Grace due to Gaze! Gaze into Glory and receive Grace!

  31. Motivated by Grace Titus 2:11-13 “11 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself to redeem us from wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his, eager for good.”

  32. All Ministry Redemptive 2 Corinthians 2:6-8 “6 The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient. 7 Now instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. 8 I urge you, therefore, to reaffirm your love for him.” Ministry is not to condemn but to save. No one should feel hopeless. Church discipline is to redeem and not to merely purge.
